This is my first post here, so forgive me if I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about ![]()
I have a 2 1/2 yr old and a nearly 6 week old. If I ever have hopes of doing laundry, eating lunch, or having use of both arms again I think I need to learn how to wear my baby. The different types of slings/wraps/carriers is overwhelming. I FF, so that's not much of an issue. I just need a little bit more freedom. I didn't wear my older son because, honestly, I didn't really have anyone else demanding my time and attention like I do now so it didn't matter much if I rocked him and held him and didn't do much else.
I'm plus sized (18-20) and I don't plan on wearing him full time, mostly around the house and the occasional trip to the mall/zoo/playground. I would, however, like something that would allow me to wear him well into his first year. I'm also looking for something that's easy to get him in and out of and something that doesn't require an engineering degree to put on.
Thanks so much for any advice/suggestions you have to offer!!
Re: Help me wear my baby
I'd suggest a ring sling or a mei tai for you. Ring slings can be super easy to use once you get the hang of adjusting it. Mei tais are great because they allow for two-shoulder carries and can be easily used on your back.
It sounds like you don't want to deal with the learning curve of wrapping (which some find super easy & others not so much). I wouldn't normally recommend a soft-structured carrier for a 6-week old. Pouches can be difficult to size and the size you need might change as your baby grows and your size changes.
Ncebelle's blog addresses newborn babywearing: https://www.becomingmamas.com/becoming-mamas-top-picks-for-newborn-carriers/
At that age I loved my moby, and it wasn't that hard. I liked that I could prewrap it and keep in on while I took her in and out. DH hated the moby and didn't want to bother wrapping. He used the Ergo from about 6 weeks on.
I tried a RS and liked it, if I didn't like wrapping so much, that's what I would pick. It's easy to use after you learn how, and you don't have to worry about a lot of fabric. I have a friend with a pouch and she loves it from birth through 1 year.
Moby wraps are awesome for newborns, but she's in Texas. I definitely wouldn't recommend one for Texas summers, I'd die.
I really love my ring sling. The first couple times you put it on, you might want to do it in front of the mirror, to make sure you're getting everything positioned right, but after the first couple times it's super-quick in and out, so I like using it around the house for that reason.
Just an FYI, but if you order from Sleeping Baby Productions and check that you're new to babywearing on the order form, she includes a free DVD about babywearing. The DVD was really great.
Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone!
It's been over 100* for most of June. I need something that's not going to make it more miserable to go outside than it already is
I'll scratch the Moby off my list!
Thanks again for all your help!
