Pregnant after 35

Possible Pre Eclampsia

I also posted this on the August board:

So I have been swelling alot lately, but I figured with the heat and everything, it was to be expected. I went to my regular dr appt last Thurs and my blood pressure was up a little and I had gained 7 lbs in 3 weeks which they said was a lot of fluid retention. So I had to start monitoring my blood pressure, well yesterday it was borderline, about 135/90 so I called the dr. Went this morning, my bp was up again and there is now some protein in my urine. I have to do the 24 hour urine catch now. I am really hoping that it shows that there is not alot of protein and I don't have to be put on bed rest. I am only 32 weeks, so I obviously want to keep LO inside and "cooking' as long as possible.

I am trying really hard not to panic and get upset, which I know will only raise my blood pressure. I just want to make sure that my LO is healthy. I just feel guilty, like I did or didn't do something to make this happen.

Re: Possible Pre Eclampsia

  • I know it is easier said then done, but try not to worry. Sorry, I don't know much about pre eclampsia, but I just wanted to give you a hug. I think I have heard people here that have carried their babies to term even with higher blood pressure then yours.

  • I had pre-e with my first, way back in 1985.  There's not a lot you can do outside of trying to take it easy, keep cool and hydrated, and hope.  I ended up hospitalized for a couple of weeks, released to home bed rest, then induced at 39 weeks.

  • Oh.. sorry to hear you're going through that.. Just listen to your OB.. drink lots of water, stay cool... hope you can hang on..  I'm just a week ahead of you, so I know how you want the baby to stay in longer.. you'll be okay.. baby will be fine even if he/she comes early. Sounds like they're on top of it.. and are going to monitor you.. DON"T blame yourself for it.. nothing you could have done to prevent it...  Just keep thinking that everything will be okay...

  • At 28 weeks I had an elevated BP and a small amount of protein in my urine. I did a 24 hour catch and my numbers came back in the normal range. My doctor told me to increase my fluids, watch my sodium intake, to get rid of stress and to lay on my left side as much as possible. I am now 37 weeks.  I was in complete panic having to do the 24 hour test, but everything has worked out.

  • My bp was elevated most of my 1st pregnancy.  I had a lot of protein spilling and I looked like the elephant man because I was so swollen.  I had pre-e and was put on bed rest at 36 weeks and induced at 38 weeks.  Everything turned out great!  I have a wonderful little 5 year old girl!  Take it easy and rest as often as possible.
