Pregnant after a Loss

XP: questions about vanishing twin syndrome

Some ladies had brought this up earlier.  I was wondering if it has happened to you and what you can tell me about it.  DId you think you were having another m/c because BETA's dropped?  Did you have BETA's done?  What did they look like?  Any symtoms or just anything you could share would be helpful.  TIA

Re: XP: questions about vanishing twin syndrome

  • My betas were really high in the beginning of my PG and my ob thought that I might be carrying twins.  At 5wk ultrasound, there were 2 dots on my u/s, but it was too early.  At 6wks, there was only one fetal pole.  For my case, my doctor only checked betas the week I found out I was pregnant.  Just because of where I was in my PG, my doctor did not test for betas because they could do a u/s at that point.  I know this is not very helpful.  I definitely recommend going in for another beta to you.  GL

  • The only way to know if it's vanishing twin symdrom would be via ultrasound. Beta's can not be used to determine a multiple pregnancy.

I have seen girls who have beta's in 400's and have 1 baby, and at 14dpo last pregnancy my Beta was 302 with triplets.

I hope they are able to give you answers soon.

  • I'm not PgAL but I wanted to share my experience with you.

With my first pregnancy it was twins. At 7 weeks Baby A had a heartbeat and measuring right on track and Baby B was measuring 6w2d with no heartbeat. At 9 weeks for my follow up Baby B had completely disappeared and Baby A no longer had a heartbeat. I had no symptoms other than a small amount of brown spotting over the weekend at 8 1/2 weeks. Baby B vanished without any symptoms. I didn't have any betas done so I can't help you with that. Good luck.

  • I have no personal experience with this but yes, I have known people who have had their betas drop when they lost one of the twins and then start to rise again and go on to have one healthy baby

  • I did not have beta's drawn. At my 1st u/s, which was at 8 weeks, the u/s tech spoted a second yoke sak but it was empty along with my current baby measuring right on schedule.  If we did not have the u/s we would have never known.  I did not have any bleeding or spotting what so ever during this pregnancy.

  • Amye's right, betas really have no bearing on whether or not it's twins. This pregnancy, I had early ultrasounds and my doctor saw two gestational sacs around 5 weeks or so. The next week there was one and a heartbeat.
