Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

fontanelle closing a bit early

My baby went for his 12 month checkup today. His doctor said his fontanelle is almost closed and it's early... he said you see it more at 15 months and up. He said his head growth is fine though so he was not worried. But i'm still worrying. Anyone else in this boat?

Re: fontanelle closing a bit early

  • My LO's fontanelle is only pea-sized now.  He just turned 12 months.  So it will be a bit smaller, but pedi wasn't worried about it.

  • That's the soft spot right?  My Pedi said DD's was gone at her 9 month appt.

  • The front soft spot was completely closed by 12 months. LO was also being monitored by a craniofacial specialist because that front soft spot was closing faster than normal but not fast enough that she would have developed craniosynostosis. I think so long as it is not closing so fast as to cause head shape issues or putting pressure on the brain then there are no worries, 12-15 months is pretty normal for closing.
  • Thanks so much ladies.
