Success after IF

IF Injections

DH and I are slotted for our first IVF in July. I just got my AF today ( I kind of figured after havin g my 3rd IUI - we had to do b/c insurance would not cover IVF unless we did 3 IUI's). Anyway, how are the injections / shots you do at home? Is is hard/tedious? Do they hurt? I'm 40 and DH is 42. He has motility and morph issues which is why we need to take the IVF route. This has been a downer because we naturally conceived ou1 18 month old son on the first try.

Re: IF Injections

  • painful? a lil' pinch. most are "sub-q" which means a short lil' needle into the flub of your belly. The "PIO" progesterone shots are "IM" into the muscle. Those hurt a lil' bit more, but I'm able to do them myself now, no prob.  You just kinda get thru it all, I guess. Tedious? a bit. You have to plan around them a little, timing wise. Take them with (and keep them room temp if neceesary) if you're out, stuff like that. But it's generally just for a few days.  Your nurse will take you thru it all step by step, and you'll get sheets, etc. Youtube also has a ton of examples, I'm sure. some IVF sites will have tutorials as well.

Good luck on your cycle - may it all be worth it!!!

  • Sorry AF showed Sad

I didnt do IVF, but I did do injects for my IUI cycles. The injections are not bad at all. The worst part is just psyching yourself up to do them! I had a training class at my RE office and they went over everything and had me try a couple of times in the office (with saline), so I was prepared when I went home.

    Good luck!

  • They are 100 times worse in your imagination than they are in real life! The first one is scary and then when you barely feel it you'll  think it's a breeze.
  • The shots themselves do burn a little going in, but you get used to them. I would always keep ice near by for right after I got the shot to hold on the spot and numb the area. It definitely helped me. Good luck with everything!

  • We did IUIs also -- but I used injectables.  Like Davez said most are subq -- small needle and does not hurt.  Would be better to have someone do it for you but I did mine everynight with out a problem.

    Good Luck!

  • Everyone's experience is a little different, so, I can only tell you mine.  The first one is, by far, the worst.  You get yourself worked up and you look at that needle and you think "really, I'm really going to stick this in my body?" and then you do it and you laugh at yourself because, I swear, it is no big deal at all.  I've been through 8 IVF's and 3 or 4 other injectable cycles and I can still remember that very first shot.

My advice?  Make a little routine for yourself.  Wherever you are going to do them, do it in the same place (and same time) every day.  I did them at the dining room table right after Jeopardy, lol.  Well, I did that for the first 5 or 6 cycles.  After that, I basically just stood in the kitchen next to the fridge (I had done it so many times I didn't have to think about what I was doing!).  But, early on, I lined up all the meds on the table, got all of my needles and felt organized.  My husband and I also had a nice routine for my PIO shots.

I don't know if you are doing PIO, but, yeah, they are a little harder than the belly shots.  Again, everyone's experience is really different.  Mine were really easy and I never had pain from them (and, trust me, I had ALOT of needles stabbed into my butt!), but, I know others have had lumps and aching and bruising from them.
