2nd Trimester

Bored...want to ask an obgyn nurse /mom of 1 yr old anything?

I am an office nurse, so my specialty is conception until contractions...after that I send them next door to L&D!

Get creative! Someone ask me my least favorite baby names of my patients :)

  • i know movement is asked all the time, but I am 23 weeks shouldn't I be feeling him alot? Today I have only felt him kick a couple of times and its making me nervous. The kicks havent been very strong either. I know im probably being paranoid but should I call my doctor is I don't start feeling him a little more?

Least fave- Alba (a girl) and Elsie...and Coleman (boy), reminds me of camping gear...also had a Kobi (girl!)

Fave- Hard to say, they have all been very common/repeating lately.....tons of Bellas, Kylies, and the like. Probably Ruby and Eli are my favorite this week.

Do you know where your placenta is? If its anterior, it might be kind of blocking the kicks. The docs at my office don't have you start counting the kicks until about 28 weeks. But if you're concerned, give them a call. We really don't mind frequent callers, and your office shouldn't either! If they don't offer an appt, they can at least give more reassurance.

  • I'm getting a massage this week (not a special pre-natal massage), are there spots I should tell her to avoid?

I've been very constipated, what can I take/should I eat?

How do you feel about cord blood banking?

no pressure points...they should know where those are...on hands, feet, etc. try to lay on side vs stomach. some docs say avoid calves. For constipation...start simple. Colace, benefiber. Then Miralax if no improvement, and get uncle sams cereal...Honestly, most docs think Cbb is a waste of money. expensive. If you have that money, put it in a high interest CD. If LO had health issues, you could use it...and if not, youve got a college fund. Sorry about format, switched to phone

  • My question is about marginal umbilical placement (I am about 22 weeks).  My doctor told me I have no restrictions but I have read to not exercise and be careful of my activity level.  What does your office say about restrictions? Thanks!

I have not personally had any patients with this issue. You might want to get a second opinion with another doc in your office...always a good idea to meet several docs in the practice. You never know who will be on call when u need them! Good luck, sorry I can't be more help.

  • Ok, I'll play as well:

    1. I have a really numb spot right under my left boob/ where my ribcage begins (in the middle, so kinda between breasts). I know it's harmless and just baby squishing stuff up there, but it feels like my upper body is falling asleep. What exactly would he be pushing up there so it feels like that?

    2. I always hear about high blood pressure being a risk factor and am well aware of why and how. My blood pressure is usually dangerously low. A 90/60 makes the doc do the happy dance, most of the time it's lower than that. It's just always been this way, though. Anyways, my questions:

    a) if my bp goes up higher than the for me normal, when are we starting to be worried? and

    b) are there risks associated with low bp during pregnancy?

    3. Skin Tags. I know it's normal and all, but I have some pretty nasty looking ones on my aeriola - can I get rid of those with one of those home kits? Should I wait until after baby is born or could I do it now?

    4. I lost my last baby at 22 weeks due to incompetent cervix. This time my cervix seems to hang in there just fine (it's 8 years later, after all) and scores 3.7cm all the way through. Is there any activity which I should avoid? Or are there known things which shorten the cervix (I don't know...food, sports or whatever?)? I would love to know so I can stay away. Sounds silly, but I am still terrified of things going wrong again.

    I think that's enough for now......shoot! ;-) And thanks!!!

    1. I doubt its actually baby pushing something at this stage, but your growing uterus could be pushing your organs and those organs could be pushing on a nerve. My other guesses would be heartburn, which sometimes presents as a numbing feeling, or gallbladder troubles/stones. If this pain comes and goes, and gets worse after eating spicy/fried/citrus fruits, I would guess the latter 2. As always, continue to bring it up with your provider, even if they have dismissed it in the past!

    2. My concerns with low BP are dehydration and dizziness/fainting. So keep an eye out for both If either number, top or bottom, went up by 20 points, that might be cause for concern. It would actually be a normal number to someone else, but for you, it might be too high. You must be in good shape though :)

    3. I would not remove the tags yourself...not at first. Ask your provider if he/she will do it. If they say they don't need to, tell them you are considering breastfeeding and that might change their mind. Most docs will send a few tags to pathologists to make sure its just the normal skin tags. After that, they might be more inclined to let you remove them on your own. But I would be worried that they would be slow to heal/get infected. Then if you had an early baby and wanted to breastfeed, it could cause problems.

    4. Glad you have a good cervix this time around. Nothing you can do to avoid shortening, but if it was shortened, they would put you on a modified bedrest of some type, so if I had that history, I just wouldnt be doing any strenuous exercising. They probably wont monitor your CL anymore, so you will just want to report any and all vaginal/rectal pressure you have.

Hope that helps. And to stress...always check with your doc :) Not meaning to dish out actual professional medical advice, just my experienced opinion :)

GL to all! I'm hitting the sack!

  • I'm more interested in the gossipy stuff. Is there anything your pregnant paitents do that drive you or the other nurses crazy? Anything we can do to be on the nurses good side? Do the nurses know/care if a patient has insurance or is on public assistance. Does anyone read the post delivery thank you notes, or is there a better way for a patient to thank the Ob/gyn team? Finally, is there anything you judge patients for? Often when I'm in the Doctors waiting room. I find myself getting sad and a little judgy watching the other moms. I will see so many pregnant teenagers who already have kids, just totally. overwhelmed I always wonder what the staff thinks. They see so many of these cases, I would think it would be hard.

Lol, you don't have to follow her advice if you're skeptical. :) Be a little more light-hearted!
