D.C. Area Babies

Bay Area Midwifery

Does anyone have experience with this birthing center?  My H and I will be moving to DC next week and I would like to give birth in a birthing center.  I have Tricare and it seems like this may be my only choice in the area.

Re: Bay Area Midwifery

  • For some reason, I remember someone posting a bad review of them a few months ago. I don't remember who it was so hopefully they will chime in.

I am from Annapolis and my concern would be traffic and distance for you to travel for appointments to their location.

    Good luck with the move!

someone did post a terrifically horrible review of this practice a couple months ago. obviously there are always two sides to every story, but i wouldn't touch this place with a pole.

where are you planning to live? annapolis is an hours drive from DC on a great day with no traffic. there are several other options i'd recommend, depending on where you will be living.

We will be living on Bolling AFB.  I'm not sure exactly where Tricare wants to send me, but I think it may be Bethesda.  I may switch my insurance so I choose where I want to be seen, but according to the website, Bay Area is the only birthing center option.

I know people who lived in Northern Virginia had to go to Bethesda for delivery (but not prenatal/OB care; some got theirs at Andrews but I don't know if it's still offered there).  So my guess is that you'll be within the radius to have to go there if you're on Prime.  FWIW, I delivered DS there and switched to Standard for Baby #3 just so I didn't have to go back...was not impressed with any of my prenatal care or my L&D experience.  I'm using a midwife practice in northern Bethesda and delivering at Shady Grove (supposedly the closest I can get to a "birth center experience" under Standard), which is probably farther than you'd like to go with the uncertainties of DC traffic.  Definitely start looking into it now so you can find out if Bay Area is a possibility under your current coverage...maybe you could find something in Virginia since you won't be too far?  Prenatal choices in the DC area are limited because of the giant naval medical center is just outside the Beltway, and Tricare expects you to go there.

Thanks.  I'll look into Virginia.  This is my first and for some reason I'm terrified of the Navy hospitals.

  • Have you looked at Belvoir? Brand new hospital opening within the next 60 days and they have midwives on for at least 5 our of the 7 days in L&D. Might be worth a look.
