My pediatrician said no TV for the first two years. Am I being uptight by following her instructions? I saw one of you was buying movies for birthday gifts so I'm wondering if it's common practice here to let the babies watch tv.

Re: do you let your babies watch TV?
The TV is on a lot in the evenings when DS is playing, but he rarely pays attention. We don't sit him in front of it for means of entertainment. I don't think he'd sit still and watch it even if we tried. He's on the go!
BFP #1 11/28/09 ~ EDD 8/6/10 ~ DS Born 8/9/10
BFP #2 8/27/13 ~ EDD 5/8/14 ~ Natural MC 9/18/13 at 6 weeks, 6 days
BFP#3 3/28/14 ~ EDD 12/7/14 ~ DD Born 11/21/14
BFP#4 6/15/17 ~ EDD 2/20/18
Cinemax is way better.
We held off until a year with my first (other than catching an occasional hockey game)...and #2 has only been exposed to it here and there when his brother is watching a show (I try to keep him entertained and not just sitting in front of the tv, but sometimes I catch him staring at the pretty colors).
If you can hold off and want to hold off, then go for it, but if you give in I wouldn't feel too bad about it. I let my son watch Sesame Street when he was 1 and 2 and I swear he learned all his letters from it.
Everything in moderation, and if it gets you through a shower without a screaming child, it's worth it!
Maybe 2 hrs a day .. broken into 30 minute programs
Well, when all else fails, there is always "Faces of Death" on dvd.
Do I have the tv on when she's around? Yes
Do I place her in her bumbo and plop her in front of the tv? No
Would I ever turn on a cartoon to distract her so I can pee or get dinner started? Yes
But does she really watch it? No
You make some good points! I do feel guilty when I think about giving in. Can your baby watch a whole movie though? 120 minutes seems like a long time for a baby to focus.
We only let them watch Nip/Tuck and Damages.
In case they want to be doctors and/or lawyers.
Unable to even.

You don't understand the appeal of Benedict Cumberbatch / think he's fug / don't know who he is? WATCH SHERLOCK. Until you do, your negative opinion of him will not be taken seriously.
lol!
Um, yes! Sometimes a little Nick Jr. is just necessary to distract DD. I don't see anything wrong with it- in moderation of course.
I'm sure I'll be even MORE sure of that decision in a month when this baby is born!
C is bored by Showtime and Cinemax. True Blood is the only thing that works...
All joking aside, it comes handy in a pinch. On Saturday DH was working, I needed 15min to take care of some work stuff from home and C was absolutely miserable if I put him down for 5 secs because he wanted to walk (holding my hands) nonstop. I put Fantasia in for those 15min, and it worked like magic. We then danced and played to the rest of the DVD until it was naptime. I think as long as you are interacting with them and not just plopping them down in front of the tv for hours at a time it is fine. With all of the technology out there, I think their brains are going to develop differently anyway; have you ever seen a 2yr old work an iPhone, they're crazy good with it....
It really is the best/cheapest babysitter we have found. Especially when I have to run a quick errand. I mean, who wants to pay somebody every time they need to run up the street for a pack of smokes? DS is so into his "stories" he doesn't even notice I'm not there.
Skinemax is definitely better than Showtime after Dark.
Apparently my cable provider now offers On Demand hardcore pornography. Looks like I am going to have to learn how to use parental controls sooner than later.
my understanding is that tv is bad because it takes up time you could use doing more enriching activities... like playing, singing, reading etc.
i don't put the tv on for lo, but i like to have it on for me. i get lonely without some background noise. i don't get to watch it much. babyman seems to ignore it, mostly. i have noticed that he likes text and he loves a couple of commercials.
this is his favorite:

yesterday we watched that sucker for about 10 minutes straight. poor little guy has been a nutjob since he started teething and that little 30 second spot is like crack.
No.
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I believe that television is actually bad for a baby's developing brain. I know there is no solid body of research yet to support this belief, but I'm almost certain there will be someday. Obviously my yet-unsupported beliefs are my own and every parent does what they think is best for their children.
I totally love TV and watch it all the time when DD is in bed and I know that watching even for a few minutes will turn me into a zombie. I can't imagine what it does to a baby's still-developing brain.TTC since 11/05...ectopic pg 4/08...early m/c 6/09...BFP 10/5/09!

PBS and Sprout...My baby gets all excited over Super Why..
I let DD start watching kids shows (we have tv on all the time) when she was 14 months and DS was born. DS has been watching since he was born.
If I didn't let DD watch tv, I'd go CRAZY.
Your reply to the other post inspired my inquiry. I'm not trying to be snarky but if you bought him 10 movies for his birthday that is not the occasional movie.
Why are you so concerned as to how many movies I purchased for my son? Go read the other post as to why I purchased so many if you are that judgy?
How do you know how often she is going to cycle through those movies? Just because he got 10 movies for his birthday doesn't mean he's going to watch all 10 of them daily.
Unwad your panties, chicky. I have no interest in joining the bashing you bandwagon. I merely made a comment. 10 movies seems like a lot of a one year old. You know your child better than I do.
yeah, i bought adventures in babysitting "for my kid". i'm not planning on watching it anytime soon, it's cause i saw it for $4 at target.
Then shut your mouth.
My DH bought the old Masters of the Universe and Tron cartoons "for the DS" and for some reason, they only come out of the box when DS goes down for the night...
I love this.
All of my kids watch T.V. Nap time isn't until Go Diego Go is over.
Nope. She's never watched TV unless there happens to be one on at a friend's house or restaurant or something.
(No judgement from me to those who do- we just aren't a big TV-watching household, so it wasn't a hard choice for us.)
i just googled tron cartoon and all i could find was this:
https://www.retroist.com/2010/12/13/1983-tron-cartoon/
did he buy that or do you mean the movie tron? because that's not a cartoon, it's ART.
actually, ds would reliably watch about 10 minutes of tron. he loves blue and red. try popping it in sometime, really.
Bar tab = $156,000, Bus to Foxwoods = $0, Puking in the Stanley Cup = Priceless
Don't forget Dexter!! DS might want to be a police man or detective.
Oops! I put Tron but I meant Voltron... kinda like Transformers but a little different. I tease my DH whenever we get packages from Amazon that are movies "for the boy" and it's just DH's favorite stuff from his childhood! But maybe when Gideon is old enough to watch it, I can plant DH and DS in front of the TV while Mommy goes shopping...
