Belly sleepers

Do you have regular bumpers in your crib? I've never had them in the crib, but my kid is bumping her head on the daily now. She's old enough now, right? RIGHT??

Re: Belly sleepers

  • I put up the regular bumpers when Vivienne started flipping over and running into the sides of her crib.  I only put them on 3 sides of the crib though because I like to be able to see her when I walk in the room and the bumper on the front side annoyed me.

  • I will wait for an answer. Someones are looked very uncomfortable in the slats this AM.
  • I would say that she would be fine with them on now. I put them on a few months ago and he did fine with them. I ended up taking them down though because he was climbing on them :(  I think we will try putting them back on in a few weeks.
  • We use breathable bumpers only because she is pulling up and already tries to hoist herself up on the breathable ones, so I'm too paranoid also to have regular ones!
  • I have the breathable bumpers and then I bought 6 of the Wonder Bumpers to put on the end of the bed that he always smashed his head into. They are nice and soft but still let air flow through. But yeah, I think K is old enough for regular bumpers too. My H is just super paranoid so regular ones were a no-go for us.

  • We do.  I had the breathable bumpers in for a while but then she started crawling around her crib, trying to stand up and when she fell, she would bump her head.  It was pitiful.  I put her regular bumpers back in and she loves them.  She cuddles up next to them every night (not so crazy about that, but she mostly keeps them to her back or if she's laying on her back, she'll have her cheek against it).

I figure she's strong enough to roll over, crawl, pull up to standing so if she's not getting enough oxygen in a certain position, she'll reposition herself.

Also, ours is not firm enough that she could use it as a foothold.  We have this one except I'm pretty sure we got it a lot cheaper on jcp.com.

  • We never had bumpers and probably won't be getting them - he'll just figure out how to use them to try to escape! He moves around a lot but seems to be doing just fine.
  • We had regular bumpers and then my super child literally pulled them off one night. Ripped the ties right off. SOOO we got the breathable ones. I really like them and he has yet to destroy them. He rams his head up in the corners to sleep but it's never really seemed to bother him.

I think she is old enough to have regular bumpers though. Especially if she is bumping her head. Eli would stick his face literally right into the bumper and he's still alive (I spent many a night freaking out about it too).

  • I have always had them.  She tends to stay in the middle of the crib while sleeping and only gets over to the side when she is awake.  She likes to roll over and play with the edges of them.

  • Whew. I am going to give it a go after I get done nagging my H to lower the crib mattress for the bajillionith time.

    Thanks, ladies!

  • R has been sleeping on his tummy since he was about 3 or 4 months old and we use a regular bumper. Never had any issues. Your LO is definitely old enough. Have no fear!
  • We have always had the regular bumpers and have had no problems. Once he learned to pull up to standing in his crib, we put lowered the mattress to its lowest setting.

  • We have the regular ones at this point because she's all over the place at night and likes to sleep cuddled against the side of the crib. We didn't have them and one night when she rolled to be next to the crib siding I heard her head smack the wood through the monitor... never again. Bumpers for us. She does attempt to stand on them, but the just fold flat for some reason and don't give her any added height so I'm okay with that.

This is us too. Plus I'm a paranoid freak about her not being able to breath. She fall asleep frequently with her face in the bumpers.

This is pretty much us. Before she was standing she would pull at the bumpers to play peek-a-boo. While oh so cute she's done a number on pulling them out of position.

  • We've always had bumpers in her crib, though to be fair she didn't start sleeping in it until 5 mos.  She's always done fine, she likes to smash herself into the corner, which I can't imagine would be too comfy without them.  So I'm that mom I guess.

  • Nope, no bumpers. I just let him whack himself.
  • I have breathable bumpers in.  I only acquired a belly sleeper as of this weekend when we ditched the sleep suit for good though.

  • Yep, I've had a regular bumper in his crib since he was born. I will remove it once he starts standing on it.

  • I've had a belly sleeper with regular crib bumpers since day one.

  • C's been tummy sleeping since 4 months. I've never used the bumpers except for nursery pictures before he was born. He's pulling up now anyway, so I would have needed to take them out anyway.

C bumps his head occasionally, too, and DH will sometimes move him before we go to bed at night to make sure.

Yes we do! We've had them in there since 6 months because she moves all around her crib. She even sleeps on her tummy with her head smushed up against the bumper.

This Jane almost exactly. Funny babies.

  • I would tell you yes it's fine to put them in but it is such a pain to change the crib sheet with them.  I do use those ultimate sheets but sometimes we have a bad week of leaking or spitting up and I have to change the sheets every day.  And the durn bumper.  Ugh.

  • I still have the breathable ones up. (Yes, I gotz both) I am still scared to put the regular ones back in her crib. Especially since she likes to burrow her face in her mattress at night.

For this child I prayed, and the LORD has given me my petition which I asked of him.

  • Ask me again in a few months, but at this point we don't plan on ever using bumpers
  • We have had breathable bumpers for a while now, keeps hims from getting his arms and legs stuck in the slats, also glad we got those bc now that he is pulling up he tries to use them to bost himself up and they don't let him they just collapse.
  • I don't, but I would totes put them up if M was hitting her head. I think she'll be fine.

I also don't use a shopping cart cover, though, and I encourage belly sleeping, so I'm not sure anyone should take my parenting advice =)

  • We have breathable bumpers right now, but the boys have started whacking themselves in the head and those bumpers don't protect much.  I'm debating putting their real bumpers back in.

    Hold me.

Heheh. This is us too. No bumpers. They'll eventually figure it out.

  • We have the breathable ones.  I would like to put the fluffy/cute ones in now, until she can pull herself up (at that point I freak again-standing on them). However, I am too lazy. They're a pain to get in and a pain to change the sheet with them in. So, I don't think she's getting bumpers. I'll stick with the breathable.
  • Once Remy started rolling and wiggling around I put the bumpers in there. He would otherwise smack the crap out of his head on a regular basis.
