introducing a bottle (need help for a friend ASAP!)

My friend's son is around 4 months old and has been EBF, but she needs him to take a bottle now and he wants NOTHING to do with it.

They've tried having other people give him the bottle and they've tried a couple different brands (I think Dr. Brown's and Avent), but no luck.

Isn't there some bottle out there that is supposed to be really good for this transition? I can picture it in my head...like the nipple is really big and round (kinda like a boob)? I just can't think of the brand. I just did a quick google search and can't find what I'm thinking of.

Any suggestions or tips I can give her?

  • DD#1 would never take a bottle either, so we went right to sippy cups...I know it seems early, but my general thought is that if he hasn't taken a bottle to this point and he's 4 months, there is a high likelihood that he'll never take a bottle.

  • you might be thinking of born free. They have large nipples. My DD was a little younger when taking the bottle, but I had to be out of the room. It took a few tries...good luck
  • DD had an easier time starting with the Gerber NUK which has the bigger nipple.
  • I think the one you are thinking of is Tommee Tippee.  But I have also heard that if you don't start by 6 wks, and then continue with some frequency, they often won't take one at all.

Maybe you're thinking of the Breastflow?  They're available at BRU (I think).

I have no advice for your friend - but plenty of "been there!" sympathy.  DH and I tried EVERYthing under the sun...methods and locations and positions and bottle types and people, distractions, withholding nursing ("if they're hungry enough, they'll take the bottle" - that's a giant load of BS), formula types and breastmilk, etc.  If one single person on the internetz recommended something, I gave it a shot.  Neither kid took a bottle until they were 8 and 9 months, respectively.  DD was taking a sippy before she took the bottle.  Both kids ended up liking the cheap Playtex drop-in systems with the ?latex? (brown) nipple best.   Luckily I didn't have a job I had to get back to, because I honestly don't know what I would've done.  I'm not exaggerating to say that both DD and DS probably would've gone all day without eating an ounce.  I hate to sound pessimistic, but your friend may be out of luck (or at least has a majorly uphill battle) if her DS is as stubborn as my kids were.

  • is the Mom out of the room when they try? the baby can smell her so it's best if she is not there. Maybe even out of the house!

I once met a Mom at an LLL meeting who had to quit her job b/c her baby would not take a bottle. I was in total shock, there is no way I'd go to that extreme. It's mean but if the baby is hungry enough, the baby will eventually take the bottle!

  • One mom at LLL swears by the Breast Flow bottles.

Check this out: https://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/alternative-feeding.html. If baby won't take a bottle, there are other options.

  • Maybe try the Breastflow bottles? They're a pain to clean, but they're worth a try. What's she giving him in the bottles? DS hardly ever took a bottle, but he'd sometimes drink a couple of ounces of fresh (just pumped) breast milk. It will stay good for a few hours.

  • The Breastflow and Tommee Tippee bottles seem to be popular with BFing moms and their babies.

If she does get him to take a bottle eventually, she should keep giving one to him every few days so he stays used to it.

My cousin wouldn't take a bottle---ever.  She just started drinking out of a cup really young.  maybe try a sippy?
  • we tried numerous bottles on DS and he went for the Platex drop ins w/ the brown, really soft nipple.  We never looked back.  DS was also one of those that never took a bottle until 4 months.  I freaked out because I knew I was going back to work.  One morning I woke up and gave him a bottle of BM and he guzzled it down.
