Doula or no Doula

Ok ladies I need help and I know it is very early but gotta plan out the budget etc...but I found a doula that is nice and resonabley priced but I am having second thoughts.

I really want a natural birth just like i had with my daughter (I had a doula do it then but it was my friend who did it for free) and now I am debating if its worth the $$ and stuff on having one again.  This lady was really sweet and nice but I didnt feel a complete connection there and feel maybe I should keep looking but then my guilt comes in and I feel bad.  Any thoughts?

Re: Doula or no Doula

  • my thoughts are pretty straightforward:

if you want one, get one

if you didn't feel connected, keep searching!

GL! I am thankful that there are some doulas on staff at the hospital where I'll deliver - although it is first come first served.

  • Oh wow on staff at the hospital thats cool maybe I should check mine...I know that you are assigned a nurse while at my hospital and she is your nurse and yours only and we plan for my mother in law to be there no matter what (even if i have to fly her out a month early YAY for her getting laid off work lol) and she is very calm and willing to do whatever for me and i think this time it might be nice just to have DH and my MIL

  • you are a brave brave woman! I don't think my MIL will survive if she is the only other person I see besides DH. In fact, right now the tentative plan is that DH and I will not really inform family we're in labor until pretty late unless induced or c/s. But that, of course, is all likely to change.

  • I would say if you are not feeling a connection with the doula, then she is not the right person.  If you feel like your MIL can be the same kind of support as your friend was, both helping you through labor and being an advocate for you, then go for it with just her and DH.  Maybe interview a few other doulas while you are thinking about it.  You may find one you really connect with or the interview process will help you realize that you already have the support team you need.  Good luck either way!!!

  • I would highly recommend getting one; especially if you want to go all natural. Don't just settle though- interview a bunch a choose the best fit.
