Baby Showers

Would you?

Please forgive me if this a question you get a lot.  I have lurked here a few times, but not much.  We are considering registering for a few things today.  We found out we are team blue this week and I am excited and want to start looking at things.  I know I will be having a couple of baby showers, because my family has told me and work has told me.  I have never liked registering for big things, because I feel like I am being tacky and I feel bad about people spending a lot of money.  We never registered for anygthing big for our wedding.  We aren't planning on registering for any really big baby things.  We will buy our own furniture.  We already have a stroller, carseat, and pnp that we bought for my daughter before we found out that there was anything wrong.  We never had a shower.

I plan on breastfeeding and need a breast bump.  But the one I want is $250.  It is the only expensive thing I am considering. I feel like that is too much to register for.  But I know sometimes a lot of people will go in on a big gift.  I may just register for all of the extra accessories and not the pump. WWYD?

Re: Would you?

  • Great question!  I have not registered yet, but what I've learned from other people is that you should register for most of the items that you think you will need for the baby (including car seat, stroller, breast bump, etc) because even if you do not receive these items as gifts, stores (like BRU or Target) will usually send you a registry completion certificate for 15 or 20% off.  So even if no one buys you the bump, you can buy it at a discount!  Also, I think some people will want to buy you bigger or nicer gifts, such as close family members. I don't think it hurts to add it!

I would do it, and did do it. If people don't get it for you then you can use the completion coupon like everyone says. :)

Do you know if they do this at Target?  That is the only place ib town that carries the pump.

  • I would also do it for the fact that sometimes people do group gifts. For example, my friends had a  wedding shower this weekend and they registered for like $900 cookware set (it could have been cheaper in store...) and they got it as a group gift from a bunch of family members.
  • Definitely register for it - but also check with your insurance. Mine covers breast pumps up to $250, so I bought mine with a coupon and was fully reimbursed for it. Just thought I'd pass that along!

  • I would register for it as well.  Myself, mom and sisters  are those people who usually like to go in together for showers and get a bigger gift instead of a bunch of littler stuff.
  • we registered for big things and actually got one cause a few friends wanted to go in together and get us one of the big things. even if you don't get it I know BRU gives you 10% off anything that wasn't bought that you go back and buy. It never hurts to put it on there, you never know.

I just called Target customer service...I was curious about the answer to this question too!  The representative said that yes, they do offer customers a registry completion discount.  It works as follows:

Four weeks prior to your due date, Target will send you a thank you letter with a coupon that is good for 10% items on your registry.  It is only good for one time use.  (So you can either use it one day in the store or apply it online once).  Hope this helps!

  • Yes, register for any and everything you need! Even if it seems expensive to you, others may be comfortable spending in that price range.  Plus, as PPs said, people do group gifts a lot (I am part of a department of 13 people in my school and we each chip in $10-15 and can then get a $150-200 gift for someone).

Just make sure you have a wide variety of items in all price ranges to keep things balanced.  If nothing else, you'll use the completion discount on it.

  • congrats on being on the blue team.we found out we where on the pink team and did our registry that weekend because it was less we had to worry about.so all of our registry's are done.and i think the only major thing we registered for was a changing table.as for the breast-pump,i am also going to breastfeed and just the thought of someone giving me a breast-pump just seemed weird to me so we decided to buy our own when the due date is closer.but i did register for breast pads and storage bags.i hope this helps.

  • It's never insulting to have big ticket items.  People have their own budget and can decide what to get you.  As long as you have a wide range of prices on the registry (and they are all needed for baby), I don't see how it could be offensive.

As PP said, the completion incentive makes it worthwhile!
