non-clicky poll? support group...

Hey ladies,

As a therapist, I have been invited to facilitate a support/education group for new moms at a local birthing center - since I am also a new mom, I find this especially exciting to get to do this! I will definitely be asking those ladies what they would like to talk about, but I also wanted to come in with a bunch of ideas. Tell me what you have had a hard time adjusting to or what you wish you had known prior to having LO (i.e., for me I did not realize I would need to schedule my exercise and when to wash my hair! Since LO only takes very short naps, I had to enlist DH's help). The group will definitely include information on "baby blues" versus postpartum depression/anxiety/psychosis, but any other suggestions for topics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • I am a member of a moms' group that I go to 2x a month(if I can make it!). It's not for PPD but that has been discussed. One if the other Feb mommas from thebump is actually in my group ;). We talk about all kinds of things. Sharing birth stories, breastfeeding issues, balance in our lives, sexual issues(lack of desire from either husband or wife), starting solids, cloth diapers, separation anxiety...etc. There isn't really a set topic for the get together but usually one comes up after sitting there for a moment and chatting. Sometimes they are more focused, other times they are all Over the place and smaller groups form. We also have a private Facebook group for members to post questions and make comments that no one else can see. I really enjoy it!!!

  • I'm in a support group (same as Shanin8's) and I love it!  We talk about everything!  Once a month there are 2 therapist (one is a sex therapist) and its so nice having their advice.  It is something I look forward to every month.  I think it would great for you to do in your area!  Some mom's bring their babies, and others leave them at home to get a break, so I'm sure it'd be fine if your baby was there.

  • The biggest adjustment for me was feeling like I would never have my life back.   My freedom & independence was gone and it was overwhelming.  That, and the isolation.  Oh - and who knew how hard breastfeeding was gonna be!?!

  • Sleep deprivation...oh man has the 4 month wakeful been REALLY hard. I am personally not a fan of CIO but if we get to 6 months and this continues I may reconsider! We are zombies only getting 1-3 hours of sleep at night and Ty usually only sleeps a max of 2 hrs during the day in 15-30 min intervals. Late nights are fine but when you have been doing it for months on end it can wear you down.
