Are cloth type bassinettes safe?

I have a bassinette that is the kind covered in fabric.  We bought it when I was pregnant with my daughter.  I never thought about it before, but the inside is made cloth...kind of like a bumper.  If bumpers are a SIDS risk I am worried that this will be too.  It has mesh at the very top, but I know the baby won't stay that high up.  Now I am thinking about ordering a cradle because I am worried.

  • This risk is not really an issue until the baby can roll and get stuck up against the bumper or side of the bassinet.  It is likely that that baby will be in the crib before it can roll.

I thought part of the SIDS risk with bumpers is that the air doesn't circulate as well, which seems like it would be the same thing with a cloth bassinette, right?

  • Yes, rebreathing is one of the concerns. Just simply use a fan anywhere in the room and it's not an issue.

Ours has little mesh inserts on the sides.  But we also sleep with our ceiling fan on, so there is plenty of air circulation.
