Can I ask a flame-able question?

I feel completely stupid, you guys.

My husband is a huge athlete...if it's a sport he loves it. In his free time he runs, hikes, plays basketball, goes mountain-biking, and/or works out. We have a huge barn/workshop in the back of our house and he has turned it into his gym complete with a Bowflex gym, free weights, elliptical machine, punching and speed bags, wrestling mat, and boxing dummy. This week he bought an inversion table, which you strap yourself to and can hang upside down to workout on or just stretch. It uses gravity to decrease strain of muscles and relieve pressure/tension on your spine. The day he got it, he was so excited and wanted to see if it would help my back pain (it's been so bad over the past couple weeks). Sooo, being completely ignorant to inversion tables at the time, I did it. I was inverted for probably 20 seconds before I pulled myself back upright. I didn't think anything of it and went about whatever I was doing and left my husband to do his thang.

He tells me yesterday, "I did some reading and it's pretty clear pregnant women should avoid using the inversion table...I hope we didn't hurt the baby." Umm, whaat? Now I'm freaking out. Annnd I've been on 1st tri and read some people about how they m/c and didn't even know it until their next appointment. I am seriously worried. I haven't been hurting or anything, so I'm hoping I'm just psyching myself out.

Obviously I'm not going to do it again, but do you think I hurt something? Seriously, it was like 20 seconds...what could have happened?? Ugh, I'm so mad at myself for doing it!

  • I think your fine. I would call and mention it to your Dr. though if you are worried.

  • I can't imagine why that would be dangerous, especially this early in pg.  What did your DH read that made him think it wasn't a good idea?  Either way, you only did it once for a small amount of time, so even if it was the worst thing ever, I still think you'd be fine.

    He didn't say why exactly it should be avoided, and I tried to find information about it online but no site gave a reason. I am thinking it could be that it increases uterine pressure and can cause the placenta to detach or something, decrease oxygenation, and put strain on the baby.

    Ditto.  It's probably not that big of a deal right now, but it's probably a really bad idea at 9 months!

  • Well, pregnant women can do inversions in Yoga like downward dog or headstand (if they know how to do it before pregnancy properly) so why not? Probably just not for prolonged periods that would cause dizziness.

  • I honestly think that the company who made the machine simply put that in there to cover their butts in a lawsuit.  There are a ton of things that are marked "not intended for use by pregnant women" or "check with your dr if you are pregnant or nursing."  I swear my prenatal multivitamins say that. Stick out tongue

    Check with your Dr for your peace of mind, but that baby is about as stuck as it is going to get.  Inversion isn't going to unstick it or anything.  Very few physical things that don't injure you in another way can hurt your very small fetus at this point!  Once the uterus isn't so protected (12 weeks on) then you start being more cautious about your midsection.
