reflux moms- baby not eating because of it?? Help please

So I thought for awhile my LO had mild reflux (never seemed to bother him). Well monday for some reason it got really bad and has been ever since. We went to the dr wednesday and she said he definitely has reflux and since he started spitting up so much we needed to treat him for it.

So yesterday and today he will eat for about 10 minutes then pull away so I burp him. He definitely is still hungry so I put him back down to the breast and he cries at pulls away at the same time as trying to get the nipple in his mouth (but never actually closes his mouth around it). I bring him back upright and calm him down and then try again but same thing. My husband had to give him a bottle this morning so he could eat (I sat there and cried). He took the bottle (he was sitting propped up) just fine with no problems.

What do you think is the problem? Does the relux hurt him when he is side laying for breastfeeding??

How long did it take for the medicine to work? He has taken it 4 times now (zantac). THanks ladies, I don't know what to do since he wont eat :)

  • I would try a different hold for nursing. It seems like the positioning isnt working.

It took about a week for zantac to make a difference in my DS's reflux.

    Hang in there!

  • My daughter seemed to do best when I nursed her as upright as possible.  I used pillows to help with the positioning.  Zantac takes a while to work.  The pedi told us 3-4 days to see an improvement but that it takes a week or two to really make a difference.  Good luck!

  • That's definitely classic signs of reflux (that I know all too well...) When LO was first put on Zantac (7 weeks ago) it took a good day or two to notice a difference. The reason he was placed on it in the first place were due to physiological symptoms (heart rate drops & apnea).  These were all while he was in the NICU.

After 5 weeks he out grew the dose and was pushing away during feeds, crying, acting hungry but not taking his bottle. For a whole week I put up with this because I wasn't familiar with the behavioral signs of reflux. His pedi upped his dose and within 2 doses we noticed a huge difference.

I'd say give it 2 days.  If LO is still fighting his feeds, call your pedi and make sure his dose is high enough.  George is on 2.5mL/day (about .8mL 3xday) and he weighs 10.5 lbs.  This is the max dose for a baby his size, but it's definitely helping.

  • Mrs. Dink you just described exactly what i'm going through with my son, thank you for giving me hope. I've been here crying so worried because he keeps crying when i try to feed him. usually he eats 5oz each bottle and i'm lucky to get almost 3 out of him the past day or so. He has nothing else going on, throat and ears looks good, chest sounds good, no vomiting, no diarhea or constipation (maybe a little gassy). My pedi just upped our dose this morning to better match his weight. Please god i hope this works because I'm sick of being a nervous wreck!

  • i would check out nursing positions on kellymom.com too - you could nurse him in a football hold where he is sitting up and that would probably get him as upright as he was when he took the bottle.

No problem :) Acid Reflux (GERD, the painful reflux) kept our LO in the NICU an extra two weeks!!  It's a monster, but once you get it under control, it makes life much more bearable.  Hopefully this dose works.  Keep me posted! I'm interested to see how it's going for you!
