Babies: 0 - 3 Months

i dropped my baby!!!

i was trying to put my dd down on the couch and i miscalculated and dropped her on the living room floor! its carpet and the couch isnt too high.  she cried for a minute but then stopped and hasnt cried since.  she is ok right?  should i call the pedi?  she hasnt cried since i dropped her so i am hoping she is ok.  i am a new mama and dont know what to do.  oh and she is 2 weeks old.

  • I am still trying to figure out the miscalculation part - were you dropping her from a height? - but just in case this is not MUD - yes, call the pedi.

  • no i miscalcuated where the couch was.  i was looking at her and not the couch when i was putting her down and i only got half of her on to the couch. my pedis office is closed now so i dont know who i should call. do i call the hospital?
  • If this really isn't MUD, call the pedi office. There should be an option for an on call person to talk with.

  • Take her to the E.R. and have the staff pedi look her over for any possible problems.

Every pedi office I know has an after hours person/number.  Odds are they will tell you to get your LO checked out at the hospital though.

  • Honestly, yeah, I'd probably call the doc (or even L&D, seeing as how you just got out of there) and see what you should do, but if she didn't fall head first or strike her head at all, I wouldn't worry too much. She probably cried more from the shock than anything else.

you are a failure as a mother.  why would you do that to your daughter?  she deserves breastmilk.  you should have given her up for adoption if you were going to end up giving her poison.  didn't you ever learn that breast is best?  oh wait.  she didn't even get the breast because your first failure was pumping.  i feel sorry for your daughter.  i hope she doesn't have problems when she grows up.

  • Miscalculated? Happens to me all the time. It's the tricky conversion from metric that'll get you everytime. I can't tell you how many times I've dropped DD from the conversion error... Or worse yet, fat fingering on my calculator.

It was an accident. They happen its like getting into a car wreck you dont purposely do get into one, but they happen. Stop trying to freak this woman, that aready feels terrible, out.

It was pure sarcasm. I simply can't understand how someone could miscalculate when putting your kid down. Miscalculation implies some level of imprecision rather than placing your baby down. Like I may miscalculate when trying to toss a wad of paper into the trash from across the room. Assuming this isn't MUD (but I'm pretty sure it is), it's mind boggling that someone might have some distance between where they plan on placing their infant (e.g., the sofa) and where they release their grip on their baby. In other words, I tend to put my baby down onto the surface (sofa, bed, crib, playmat, etc) carefully with the head supported with one hand and the other hand usually under her bum until I have contact with the surface at which point I slid my hands out from under her secure in the fact that I didn't miscalculate. In other words I don't toss my baby... because she's a baby, and they're somewhat fragile and all. :)

Ah! Oops. I've also seen it used as a backward WTF when something is so particularly effed up that is backwards. Thanks for clarifying for me! :)
