advice on increasing my milk supply

I currently pump at most 2.5 to 3oz at a time.  I've been taking fenugreek and blessed thistle for about a week but haven't seen much of an improvement. I'd like to be able to start building a freezer supply for when I go back to work, but at this point, I'm barely pumping enough to feed DS (I do breastfeed and pump at feedings, but since our dehydration scare, we always supplement breastfeeding with a bottle).

Any advice about other things I can do to increase my supply?

Thanks!

Re: advice on increasing my milk supply

  • I've found that pumping a bit more frequently has helped. I pump for about 10 minutes and then wait about 5-10  minutes and pump again and that way I get more..with a little extra to spare and then build it up to make a bit of a freezer supply.

  • What worked for me was pumping around the clock....literally pumping all the time.  I would pump after DD bf'd, if she was napping, and I would wake up in the middle of the night numerous times to pump.  Eventually, your supply will increase b/c of the demand.

Just be careful, after pumping so much and DD increasing the amount she was bfing I ended up w/ mastitis.  Dr. said I built my supply up too much.

  • Eat a lot of protein. I ate taco soup (ground beef and beans) for 4 meals in a row and I have never had so much milk.
  • How much fenugreek are you taking? The dosage on the bottle won't increase supply. I agree with PP about power pumping.  I did it this weekend. I did 10 min. on and 10 min. off for an hour and saw an increase.  I've also heard about drinking more water and eating regular oatmeal.  HTH.

Edited to add:  The other PP is right about protein. I read that BM is made of water, fat and protein so you need to have all 3 in your diet.
