Natural Birth

May I get some book suggestions from you?

Hello ladies,

I am attending Natural Birth classes, but in addition I would love to have some good reading material on the subject. Could you please give me some recommendations on books, and why you recommend them? Thank you so much for your help.

  • "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" by Ina May Gaskin - Ina May is one of the country's most well known midwives. This book is amazing! I found it so inspiring and informative. The first half of the book is many natural birth stories from all kinds of women. The second half is about the labor and birth process, and how the body handles labor and delivery. It's like a MUCH better What to Expect When You're Expecting. This book made me so confident in my decision to go natural.

"Your Best Birth" by Ricky Lake and Abby Epstein - I liked this because it combined birth stories (hospital, home, and birth center) with information on labor, birth, and the practices in the US and elsewhere in the world.

  • Definitely Ina May's Guide to Natural Childbirth!

Also... you're just the most polite person with your wording! :) Good luck with your journey to natural birth!

  • I third Ina May's book!  I also liked, "Hypnobirthing the Mongan Method."

Have you seen, "The Business of Being Born"?  That's a good documentary to watch (it's live-streaming on Netflix).

  • I read "Hypnobirthing: the Mongan Method" as well as "Natural Hospital Birth" by Cynthia Gabriel. NHB is a newer book, so you may have to order it on Amazon...not sure how widely it's been distributed. But if you want a natural birth in a hospital setting (as I do), this book is perfect.

    GL!

  • I loved the book, "Birthing From Within."  It made me feel connected to childbirth as a rite of passage, and it inspired me to go natural!

    Plus, it's a fun read!

  • Journey into Motherhood by Sheri Menelli. It's got to have at least 30 different birth stories, most all of them natural. I'm finding it very, very inspirational, the stories are so beautiful. It also covers a decent variety of hb's, hosp. births, unnassisteds, bc births, etc . I've found it gives me lots of different ways to think about pain, how to handle it, and different traditions to look into. They all seem so peaceful and lovely! I'm not even done with it but I highly reccomend it!

Did NOT enjoy Bradley's Husband-Coached Childbirth, BUT people seem to prefer Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way (I just couldn't find it around here.)
