Breastfeeding

When you say every two hours..

Newbie question: I started to pump at 9:45 and stopped around 10:15. Would I pump again at 11:45 or 12:15?

  • From my understanding if you are shooting for every two hours it should be 11:45.  It's from the beginning of one session to the beginning of the next.

I'd say 11:45 too. 30 mins isn't excessive if you ep. Sometimes it takes me 30 and sometimes 20. Never less than 20 though.

I guess i have been pumping the normal time it takes her to nurse.  How long should i pump for?

I only pump at work and nurse her before/evenings and weekends.

11:45 - from start time to start time.  30 Minutes isnt excessive if you EP but I wouldnt go more than 30.  I do 25 minutes 6-7 times per day.  I go 30 minutes in the morning or when I'm especially engorged.

But it seems like the OP is nursing and pumping at work. I would just pump until the milk stops flowing. I usually look and squeeze my boobs a few times and if it doesn't spray and just drips then I know it is time to stop. I usually pump for 10-15 minutes. 30 minutes seems excessive to me as well.

If I just pump to when "empty" that is about 3 minutes on my left (barely get 1-1.5 ounce each time) and then maybe 10 on my right  ( get about 2oz).

I have been pumping 3x at work for the past 3 days and nursing and I still dont make any more then that. I thought the more you pump/nurse you produce more???

Everyone is different, I pumped anywhere from 20-30 minutes when I went back to work. LCs said it was too long, but that's how long it took me to get that last let-down (3rd) and produce enough for DD's bottles.

ETA: It's "start time to start time" for nursing.
