Cloth Diapering

Line drying versus machine drying?

A few questions:

1. Do you think machine drying wears your diapers out faster?

2.  If you machine dry, do you use dryer balls? Do they really help? What kind?

3. If you line dry or air dry, how do you do it? Do you do it year-round? Do you have to have a bigger stash because air drying takes longer?

Thanks in advance for the input.  We have BG AIOs (Elemental) and I'm thinking of switching from machine drying to line drying.

Re: Line drying versus machine drying?

  • 1. Yes

    2. I use them for all of my drying. I make my own. I think they help.

    3. I have a cheap wooden drying rack and a batch of clothespins. I do it year-round. During cold/wet weather I put it in a room in our house. On nice days it's on the back deck or the front porch. I don't think I have a bigger stash due to air-drying. If I get it out to dry late morning most of my pockets are dry by that afternoon/evening, so technically I'd only need 2-3 diapers to get DD through that part of the day.

  • It depends. I try not to machine dry all the time because of the energy waste and because line drying freshens them up a bit. During the summer, I line dry if I wash in the morning. If I wash at night, I throw them in the washer instead of letting them sit overnight wet.

During the winter, I never machine dried them. I put them either on a line in the bathroom, I draped them over the baby gate, or I put them on the laundry basket edge and put them right in front of the heat vents.

It takes no more than an afternoon on the line outside, and usually overnight in the house in the winter.

  • 1. Yes

    2.  I do not use dryer balls, but I've been looking into them.  I'm curious.

    3.  I have a retractable clothesline.  I put a couple of screws on the post of our deck and attached the hook on the other side of the deck.

I had been using a wooden drying rack, but it kept blowing over and eventually broke.
I do not dry year-round (we get some pretty extreme temps in the winter)--mostly during the warmer weather.
I do not need a bigger stash b/c of line drying--I have mostly pocket diapers and they dry really fast.  My AIOs and fitteds do take longer, so sometimes I'll line dry most of the way and then pop them into the dryer for a few minutes to finish drying.

  • Just wanted to add that I try to plan my laundry days around the weather.  If I have a few nice days in the row, I sometimes will do a small load each day and line dry.  I prefer to line dry everything for less wear and tear and to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

  • 1. Yes, I think machine drying wears them out faster.

    2. We use wool dryer balls for all of our laundry. We bought ours from Buddha Bunz. But I think you can make them, or even find them on etsy for cheaper.

    3. I line dry whenever I can. I do it when the weather is warm. On our back patio we have a retractable line to hang the diapers and a table that I can use to lay things out. I don't line dry when the weather is cold because it does take longer and sometimes I'm backed up on laundry. However, regardless of the weather, I pull out my PUL covers and pocket covers and hang those over the dining room chairs. They don't take long to dry and I don't want the velcro and PUL to wear out in the dryer.

  • 1. Do you think machine drying wears your diapers out faster?  Yes.

    2.  If you machine dry, do you use dryer balls? Do they really help? What kind? I use dryer balls for all of my laundry.  Yes, I believe they help.  I got mine on Etsy.

    3. If you line dry or air dry, how do you do it? Do you do it year-round? Do you have to have a bigger stash because air drying takes longer? I live in a condo and cannot line dry outside.  I use a folding metal drying rack inside for everything I do not put in the dryer.  I have a bigger stash because I can't stop myself from buying CDs...it has nothing to do with air drying!

  • Thanks so much ladies, this helps a ton!!
