I learned the other day that 60% of teen pregnancies are the result of some kind of sexual assault/abuse.
I've gotta say that I am surprised the number is that high. Working in a high school, I just assume that many teens are having consensual sex.
So, does this info change your stance on providing BC for teens?
Re: S/O Teen sex. Did you know?
I question the validity of that stat.
Having said that, a teen who is not expecting to have sex (and therefore not on any type of BC) is more likely to be impregnated than a teen who is. So, a teen who is assaulted/abused is more likely to end up pregnant that a teen who is having consenual sex.
Condoms is one thing - allowing the schools to provide birth control pills/perscriptions is another. I am ok with condoms, but NOT with oral contraceptives. Reason being - I have a blood clotting disorder and these meds can cause clots and stroke in people with my disorder. Who knows whether my daughter inherited this disorder? They wouldn't check for this before prescibing oral contra. And these laws are trying to make it so girls can get this without parental consent. I DON'T want my child to have access to something that could potentially kill her - certainly not provided by a dr without my knowledge.
In my bag: Nikon D90; 35mm 1.8, 90mm 2.8 macro (my fave), Lensbaby Composer with macro extensions. BFP after 13 cycles and one ectopic. Lost left tube 5/19/10.
So you're saying people who are not expecting to have sex are more likely to be sexually assaulted?
No, I'm saying if a person is not expecting to have sex, they are unlikely to have BC and so if they are assaulted, that assault is more likely to end up in a pregnancy than a person who is on BC (and expecting to have sex).
So wouldn't this be even more of a reason to make sure our daughters are covered so to speak.
I believe she is just stating that the statistic doesn't refute consensual teen sex.
I believe she is just stating that the statistic doesn't disproof consensual teen sex.
This is what I was thinking.
I wonder what percentage of that sexual assault is considered date rape. I can see that happening more than one would expect, especially when teens are partying and drinking.
I am hoping to keep the lines of communication open so that when DD decides she's ready to have sex, she'll be able to come to me. I don't have a problem with her being on the BCP or using other forms of BC, but I do think she needs to be evaluated by a doctor prior to that.

I'm part of the 60%
while being on BC would have prevented the pregnancy it wouldn't have prevented what happened....
and I can't imagine putting kids on BC just to protect them from a pregnancy if they are abused....
I have no problem putting my girls on BC when they are old enough...I'm not sure when that is...but it isn't going to be under the mentality "just in case you get raped".......
