For DD's room we bought a big room sized rug from JCPenney online. It's a solid color, very soft, and washable. I got a coupon code from www.retailmenot.com and got 25% off when we got it. And delivered! Perfect! I was a little nervous only seeing it online but I couldn't be happier. Once I figure out the colors for this LO's room I'll order another rug from them for his room.
I just bought one from JCPenny on clearance for $49 for a 40x60" area rug. Super cute and comes in a few different colors. Shipping was only $7.99 and if you use the code FORTUNE today from 11-4pm you get an additional 10% off I believe. All and in with shipping I paid around $55.
This. I found their sizes to be much bigger than the usual nursery rugs at BRU or other box stores, BUT they are pricy. If you go into the stores, though, they often have the floor sample at a VERY discounted rate (i.e. a $269 rug for $70!). Many of them are in good condition and just need a steam clean from some dirt or dust while used in a display. We didn't get lucky enough to find one we liked from the sale rack, but the quality is still great.
I splurged because my parents bought us our dresser as a gift, so we were way under budget! And I couldn't find much that I liked elsewhere. I'm a bit picky.
Re: if you bought an area rug for the nursery...
