What's your plan?
I'm trying to figure this out... I plan to breastfeed, and I'd like to do a celebratory glass (maybe a mimosa?) fairly soon after the birth. I'm not sure how to do this when I'm not yet nursing on a schedule. Can someone please explain how this works?
Re: When will you have your first alcohol (for those abstaining during pregnancy)?

I wonder if the hospital even allows alcohol? I'm tempted to have DH sneak in champagne to "celebrate" after LO is born.
Last time it was the day I came home from the hospital we did a champagne toast and I got light-headed just off that.
About 2 weeks later I had a couple sips of a margarita at a local mexican restaurant but was breastfeeding and still a light weight.

Having a glass of champagne at the hospital FOR SURE! It's already chilling in my MIL's fridge!
I do plan to BF so we'll see how I plan to after that. I'm assuming the one glass of champagne will already kick me in the ass after 9 mo. of no booze!
This. If I could have my first drink in the hospital, I would.
I actually don't drink regularily. I just don't like the taste of alcohol.
But I do like to get completely hammered about twice a year in the summer prefereably while on a boat. But I'm guessing I won't do that until next summer. So yeah...like a year.

I am planning on hospital champagne. After that, we'll see. In my BFing class they said to give your body an hour to metabolize a single drink before nursing, so kinda like driving...I will probably have one here and there.
LOVE ALL OF THIS!!!!!!! I will be having a gin and tonic my step mil will be sneaking it in for me and DH will be getting me sushi!! I can NOT WAIT!!
3 words...PUMP and DUMP
I plan on pumping from the beginning and keeping a healthy reserve (fridge and freezer) to allow SO a chance to feed while I get some extra rest. This reserve will also come in handy when I decide to knock a few back because I will be "pumping and dumping" the milk during that time
THIS!!! I don't BF, so I will be drinking lots
I love having drinks on the deck and boat during the summer and this has been a very stressful and looooong PG (20 weeks of bedrest!).
My friend actually wrote down the ingredients of one of our favorite drinks from a local restaurant and she has promised to bring it to me in the hospital. Still hoping she follows through
Pump and dump does nothing but relieve yourself. It doesn't get the "bad" milk out, as your milk carries the alcohol the same as your blood. So if your BA is high, so is your milk.
I am having a beer at the hospital. Not sure what I want just yet, Summer Shandy is calling, but I feel like I might need something a bit more hoppy.
And yeah, I will use the excuse it is to help my milk come in, if need be. But I am perfectly content to just tell people to eff off. I have waited 9 months.
yes, thank you for clarifying for me. It does get very uncomfortable sitting around for your body to matabolize the booze and "sober" up. So I plan to pump and dump to relieve my engorged breasts...not planning on feeding or even caring for LO while I'm under the influence. That's what Grandma's are for ;p
SO true!
Thanks for taking that well! I see it so often on TB that people perpetuate Pump and Dump, but don't have any understanding of it. Glad you know the difference!
Cheers!
Leah's right. Pumping and dumping is a total waste, unless you really need to pump to relieve yourself a little while you're drunk.
ETA: I see now that it continued to clear up after I typed my response. I just hate the perpetuation of the pump and dump myth. So much good milk wasted.
My husband will be sneaking in a beer at the hospital and i will take just a long good drink and leave the rest for my husband. He hasn't drank any beer since we found out i was pregnant. It was his promise to God so our baby would be fine since i had already miscarried one. And he's kept it so far.
Yup, all of this. I might have a small glass of wine right after a feeding but don't plan on having a DRINK until LO is on a schedule where I will have 2-3 hours to metabolize the alcohol.
I cant wait for a drink *laugh* my hospital does allow liquor but i know most likely im going to be drugged up so i doubt i will have any as much as i think i'd like to!
Im guessing it probably wont be until i get home
and it will prolly be a nice beer to help with creating milk of course
