When do you stop

Buying birthday & Christmas gifts for your friends and their children? At the moment we still buy for 6 of our close friends and their combined 8 children for all birthdays and Christmas, add that with all the family presents and all 7 nieces and nephews that we also have and it seems like we are forever buying gifts! Do you stop at a certain age?

Re: When do you stop

  • Damn!  That's a lot of gifts.  I probably wouldn't wait for a certain age.  I'd probably say something like "Cooper has WAY too much stuff.  I'm so thankful for everyone's generosity, but let's skip gifts for christmas and birthdays this year.  Why don't we get together for dinner (or playdate) to celebrate or do 1 family gift instead?"

I don't have any ideas for birthdays but we have a similar situation at Christmas. Do you get together at Christmas? If so, for the adults we do a gift exchange. Each guy buys a "guy" gift, and the women do the same. Then the two groups draw numbers and then each person gets 1 steal. We decided not to do gag gifts so that each person gets something decent. (We figured evryone goes to at least 1 gag gift party already) Each family buys the kids a gift but we put a dollar amount cap on it. That said there are only 4 children in the group.

  • We do gifts for friends' kids if we go to a party.  Otherwise, we don't.   and for Christmas we have a small group that gets together every year and we've started drawing names so each of the 8 kids gets one gift from one kid.  That's it.

We don't get birthday or Christmas gifts for our friends unless maybe something particularly special were to catch my eye.

  • We do birthdays and Christmas, but only if I'm going to be seeing the kids.  Also, I generally stop when they stop believing in Santa.  Not sure why, that's just the trend that I've done.

I always do birthdays though, even if it is something small.

    This is a good idea!

Buying for 15 kids at Christmas is just getting way out of hand! I think with a couple of my friends I might even just say lets do one agreed amount price for Christmas. I wish toys, clothes were cheap like they are in the USA, can't get anything much for under $30 here in Australia :(

    Thanks Ladies!

I only have one little girl that I buy gifts for on all the holidays, but she's my goddaughter and my BFF's kiddo, so that is why.

Like Jill, I will only by a birthday gift for other kids if I am invited to the party. We haven't found the money tree or the leprechaun's pot of gold yet, so we can't afford to be buying presents for all of the kiddos we know. That would bankrupt us! Stick out tongue

You guys are so generous. I think it might be time to draw names out of hats for both friends and family.

  • For the most part I only have a small handful of kids I get gifts for (or a small gift of a book if we attend a party). The "yearly" (usually Christmastime) for good friends' is usually a "family" gift. Lately I just buy (wait for a crazy online discount) and renew National Geographic Kids or Zoobooks Magazine. It keeps on giving throughout the year...is fun, educational, and involves the parents too. Kids LOVE getting mail. Subscriptions run from $5-$10 on average with a discount code.
