July 2011 Moms

When will you have your first alcohol (for those abstaining during pregnancy)?

What's your plan?

I'm trying to figure this out...  I plan to breastfeed, and I'd like to do a celebratory glass (maybe a mimosa?) fairly soon after the birth.  I'm not sure how to do this when I'm not yet nursing on a schedule.  Can someone please explain how this works?

I wonder if the hospital even allows alcohol? I'm tempted to have DH sneak in champagne to "celebrate" after LO is born.

  • I literally just texted my brother that as this baby's uncle he's responsible for bringing me champagne at the hospital.  I also told him what kind and that he should buy it now and not wait until the last minute so it can be refrigerated.  Of course, I signed it "pregzilla" b/c it was so bossy.  I will have a glass at the hospital.  As far as drinking after that, I'm not sure.

  • Last time it was the day I came home from the hospital we did a champagne toast and I got light-headed just off that.

About 2 weeks later I had a couple sips of a margarita at a local mexican restaurant but was breastfeeding and still a light weight.

  • My Mom said when I was pg with DD they used to serve you steak and a beer (to help your milk come in) as your first dinner postpartum, I felt cheated after DD.  I'll likely have a beer or glass of wine my first night home.

  • Having a glass of champagne at the hospital FOR SURE!  It's already chilling in my MIL's fridge!

I do plan to BF so we'll see how I plan to after that.  I'm assuming the one glass of champagne will already kick me in the ass after 9 mo. of no booze!

This.  If I could have my first drink in the hospital, I would.

  • I actually don't drink regularily.  I just don't like the taste of alcohol.  Surprise

But I do like to get completely hammered about twice a year in the summer prefereably while on a boat.  But I'm guessing I won't do that until next summer.  So yeah...like a year.

  • We have champagne chilling in the fridge for when we get home. I plan on breastfeeding, but as long as you only drink a little (which shouldn't be a problem. I figure I'll be a lightweight after 9 months of being alcohol free) and give your body a few hours to process it, you should be fine. I figure if I have a glass right after bf'ing, I should be good to go by the time she's hungry again.

  • The nurse giving our hospital tour pointed out the refrigerator in the room for visiting family and suggested we put a bottle of champagne in there. No one even had to ask. I kind of love her.
  • My friend has a bomber of beer waiting for me. She'll bring it to the hospital when they come to meet the baby and we'll split it among myself, dh, her and her dh to celebrate!

I am planning on hospital champagne.  After that, we'll see.  In my BFing class they said to give your body an hour to metabolize a single drink before nursing, so kinda like driving...I will probably have one here and there.

  • It is totally fine to imbibe in moderation while breastfeeding. Here's what kellymom.com says on the topic.
  • I will probably have a glass of wine after I get home. I thought I would be all over the alcohol (well not really all over it, but you know what I mean) as soon as ds#1 was born, but really I was so tired that I didn't get as excited as I thought I was going to. My brother is going to bring me a growler from my favorite brewery, so I am sure I will have some of that during the first couple of days home.It really depends on LO's schedule, and how much time I have between feedings.

  • I have been craving a Corona Light with lime this entire pregnancy...in the cooler DH will be bringing to the hospital for his meals for his bodybuilding competition there will be a Corona Light and Lime. Didn't ask the hospital if we could bring it, nor do I care to ask. I also plan on breastfeeding but like others have said beer helps bring your milk in so why not:)

  • You can still drink in moderation when you breastfeed.  It depends on how you metabolize the alcohol.  One drink is probnably not going to do much at all so if that's all you plan to drink, go for it.  Just take it slow and don't slurp it down.  Your tolerance goes down and you could get a buzz.  That could also lead to more in the BM.  I used test strips for when I BF'd DS.  They sell them at BRU and I will be buying more this time around.  Some people said they were too sensitive, but I never had an issue with them.  I didn't drink much when I BF'd, but one night when I had a few more than normal and it definitely showed up.  I'm planning on maybe a glass of wine when I get home and testing first.

I plan on pumping from the beginning and keeping a healthy reserve (fridge and freezer) to allow SO a chance to feed while I get some extra rest. This reserve will also come in handy when I decide to knock a few back because I will be "pumping and dumping" the milk during that time :)

THIS!!! I don't BF, so I will be drinking lots :) I love having drinks on the deck and boat during the summer and this has been a very stressful and looooong PG (20 weeks of bedrest!).

My friend actually wrote down the ingredients of one of our favorite drinks from a local restaurant and she has promised to bring it to me in the hospital. Still hoping she follows through ;)

Pump and dump does nothing but relieve yourself. It doesn't get the "bad" milk out, as your milk carries the alcohol the same as your blood. So if your BA is high, so is your milk.

  • I am having a beer at the hospital.  Not sure what I want just yet, Summer Shandy is calling, but I feel like I might need something a bit more hoppy.

And yeah, I will use the excuse it is to help my milk come in, if need be.  But  I am perfectly content to just tell people to eff off.  I have waited 9 months.

  • I have been craving a corona basically since the day I found out I was pregnant. I have been really good and haven't even had a sip this whole pregnancy so I plan on having a beer on my first night home. I just told DH that maybe we should buy those little coronitas so I don't over do it the first time, hahaha.

yes, thank you for clarifying for me. It does get very uncomfortable sitting around for your body to matabolize the booze and "sober" up. So I plan to pump and dump to relieve my engorged breasts...not planning on feeding or even caring for LO while I'm under the influence. That's what Grandma's are for ;p

SO true! :) Thanks for taking that well! I see it so often on TB that people perpetuate Pump and Dump, but don't have any understanding of it. Glad you know the difference!

    Cheers! Beer

  • I am BFing, so I plan on waiting until I have a little buffer so I can bump and dump, even though, they say if you have a drink right after you pump, it will be out of your system by the time you have to pump again.  the other thing I heard- for those not bfing, is that the hospital is required to carry beer on hand for alcoholics and if you demand one, they have to bring you one.  This comes from a friend's brother's girlfriend who actually did this 2 years ago....

Leah's right. Pumping and dumping is a total waste, unless you really need to pump to relieve yourself a little while you're drunk.

ETA: I see now that it continued to clear up after I typed my response. I just hate the perpetuation of the pump and dump myth. So much good milk wasted.

  • Ideally, I'd love to have a beer in the hospital.  Beer is known to help your milk come in.  If I can't in the hospital, then the night I come home, I'd like to have a beer, nothing too much, as my tolerance will be down.
  • My husband will be sneaking in a beer at the hospital and i will take just a long good drink and leave the rest for my husband. He hasn't drank any beer since we found out i was pregnant. It was his promise to God so our baby would be fine since i had already miscarried one. And he's kept it so far.

Yup, all of this. I might have a small glass of wine right after a feeding but don't plan on having a DRINK until LO is on a schedule where I will have 2-3 hours to metabolize the alcohol.

  • During my breastfeeding class, they said the best time to drink alcohol is WHILE you're breastfeeding (right after is OK too, but during is better) - it'll give you the most time between feedings.
