Sick of the psychobabble

I have vented before about my BIL but jeez he is such a "psychology student". My daughter had a dance recital at school. It was very cute, the toddlers all learned these little dances and they came out in groups. So DD was in the first and youngest group and was not feeling great that day. She cried initially when she saw all the people and I comforted her and then left her up there and she didn't cry but she didn't really move the whole time (and she loves to dance and knows all the steps) just stared at the audience. . So whatever! I thought it was so cute and I videotaped it and I told her she did great and she watched it over and over and danced around to the music.

My BIL saw the video (which by the way is three and a half minutes long) and started pontificating about What is going on in her head? And was this a negative experience and basically acting like she was all traumatized.  I hate the way he makes  such a huge deal out of it. If she was upset she would have kept crying, I'm pretty sure. I don't know. I didn't want to be a  super hover mom and go in and swoop her up.

  • You didn't do anything wrong, you were supportive and loving and your daughter was fine! Your BIL needs to stuff it.

    AMEN.

You know your daughter. You know what was going on in her head (she was feeling under the weather and overwhelmed) and she's clearly NOT traumatized.

    He can stuff it.

  • Wow, he sounds so annoying! Clearly not traumatizing. I am sure it was really cute and fun. Plus, I don't think it's right to take the slightest discomfort away from your child. You won't always be there to 'protect' her and she'll deal much better with bigger things if she had experience with some small discomforts.

  • Thanks guys, you are too funny. Considering I don't let my kid cry for five minutes in the middle of the night, I think I would know if she was upset. Sigh, Ok, well I am also on progesterone, haha, so maybe it's me being crabby!

  • Not that you're concerned, but every kid I know that has ever been in a dance class has done the same thing.

I'm sorry that you have to put up with him.

  • You did nothing wrong, and your BIL is an idot. Wink You know your daughter and how she would react in a situation if it was absolutely terrifying for her (she would have kept crying). You wouldn't put your daughter in a traumitizing situation.  If anything, I think you are helping your daughter by getting her comfortable with being in front of people she doesn't know. It will only help her as she gets older. Tell BIL to shove it and not only are you a Dr (and not an idiot like pp mentioned), ubt also her mom (who knows what's best for her)

  • I can tell you I have so many students who cry and cry their first recital and end up dancing for years and years after and becoming the best performers. If stuff like that were truly traumatizing, I don't think they'd stick with it for so long. Your BIL does not know what he's talking about!

Agreed.  I did this at several dance recitals as a small girl and I know this because my parents stood back and took pictures of it. ;)  I continued to love dance, and continued taking lessons until I realized finally that I do NOT have a dancers body when I hit puberty.
