Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

SIPPY CUP Frustration and Vent.

James is now 18 months and a bit behind when it comes to drinking from the sippy cup.

He had one that was for a beginner use (Born Free) and he drinks from the take and toss kind but it was getting more and more frustrating and so I transferred him to ones with straws.

Is it me?  I think so.  I tried drinking from some of these sippy cups and even I couldn't get any liquid.  Why do they make these so hard to get any fluid out of?

Seriously, the Nuby and Tommy Tippee straw ones were impossible to slurp up (even for a veteran straw user like me let alone a beginner toddler) ....

and the hard Spout ones had NOTHING coming out of it, even when I bit on it!

What the Fleck?  How is my kid supposed to transfer to more advanced cups (he's not ready for open cups yet) if he can't drink from any?

I am going to try a regular straw in a cup and hope for the best.  He is always on the go and likes to carry his cup with him so I was hoping for something a bit more convenient.

Thanks for letting me vent.

  • Natalie didn't drink from a sippy cup for a long time.   I help the regular cup for her and she drank from that until she could hold it herself (around 18months).   When she did finally decide she could drink from a sippy, it was the playtex insulated straw kind that worked.

I've tried a variety of brands (including Tommee Tippee) and I've found Playtex to work the best for us.  We have been using the sippys that are colored and opaque (if that makes sense) for her milk.  I just got her the Playtex "water bottle" looking ones that are insulated and she drank all the water in it today!  And it's such a battle to get her to drink water.

  • Take n Toss makes straw cups that are super simple and esy to drink from.

  • We use the Nuby cups with the silicone top.  It isn't completey spill proof, but at least the kids can use them.  5 of the 6 toddlers in his day care room use those cups.

  • I either remove the valve completely or sabotage them with a small knife.  I find that Liam does a lot better with sippies when a little bit can leak out when he just tips it.  They actually don't leak as much as you think it would.

  • The Munchkin straw cups are easy.  DS was able to drink from it around 9 months.

  • I havne't found a leak proof sippy that DS can drink out of I tried a few and they suck.  We have had the best luck with the take and toss

  • I went to BRU looking for an insulated cup for LO so he can have ice water in the summer.  I bought the 24month Tommee Tippee Explora ones.  They do not leak AT ALL & LO has no problems drinking from them.  I also tried them and didn't have a problem.

ETA: we tried a few of the younger Tommee Tippee ones months ago & I wasn't impressed at all.  But I (&LO) love the 24m ones.

We've had really good luck w/the Take & Toss straw cups.  You get 4-5 of them for $3 and some change, which is super cheap for sippy cups, and they don't spill too easily.  My only big complaint is that the straws are harder plastic, which means that they get messed up if DC chews on them.

  • The problem with valve straw cups is that you have to have them put together exactly right. I bought the Munchin straw cups first and couldn't get a thing out of them. I moved on to Nuby and had the same problem. Then I tried Tommee Tippee. It's the insulated straw cup for 18+ months. Following the advice I saw in a review, I actually watched a YouTube video from the company on how to put the cup together and take it apart. It must have helped because I love that cup. It really is spill proof, which is important because DS still drops his cup all over the place. But it is super easy to sip from.

I went back and tried the Munchkin cup again and it also works. I take a sip before I give it to DS and occasionally I need to tweak the attachment. Frankly, straw cups are just a lot more work, but right now I'd rather deal with that than have milk all over my carpet.
