Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What am I doing wrong!!!

I hear so many of you say your 3 month old is only waking once or not at all.  Mine was only waking once for 2 weeks......down at 7pm up at 6am and only waking once to eat.  Now he is waking 2 -3 times.  I try and put him back down by comforting/rocking/sushing/paci etc but he wakes up 10 min later crying again.  So now I just feed him right away and he sucks it back.  Should I break this habit or is he too young.  ugh.....need sleep.

Re: What am I doing wrong!!!

  • There is a growth period from 3-4 months...maybe that is it???

I say you are just gonna have to go with it until he drops the late night feedings on his own once he is past his growth spurt

sorry i am not much help

  • Sounds like a growth spurt & he is still hungry.

  • My four and a half month old is still up that much. It's nothing you are doing wrong! I just started reading the No Cry Sleep Solution. I'm hoping it helps but I'm kinda resigned to the fact that this is what babies do! Each baby is different so I don't think you can compare.

  • You're not doing anything wrong... my guess is that they just keep us guessing!

My DD SSTN from 10-14 weeks, then was up 4-5x per night for about 10 days where she just needed a paci, then we started giving her 4-6oz on the first wake-up, which got us back to once a night for about a week. Then two nights ago we decided to wait a minute to see if she would put herself back to sleep... and she did, for the whole night. This coincided with putting 2 oz of formula into her breast milk bottle (due to supply, we weren't trying to make her SSTN).

So many factors! GL and I'll keep reading to see if anyone else has thoughts on the matter!

  • i think every baby is just so different that there is no magic thing to do. DD was sleeping through the night until she hit 3 months, and now she wakes once or twice to eat. i think that happens when they go through a growth spurt. i notice a big difference in her waking when she doesn't get good naps during the day and when i put her to bed too late. i was putting her to bed at 7:30, and she was waking up a couple of times a night, so i put her to bed at 7 and it didn't really help. then i put her to bed at 6:30, and she slept really well. to me, 7:30 is EARLY... but according to the books, babies need to go to bed very early because they get over stimulated very easily. you could always try an earlier bedtime to see if it works. you never know until you try. good luck... and remember... this is such a short amount of time in our lives that they are babies. try not to get too frustrated... your baby might need to eat more often, which is why he/she is waking more often. good luck!!!
  • if he wakes up in the middle of the night and is hungry, i would definately keep feeding him but you may want to try to feed him a couple more ounces at his last feeding at night.  Maybe he had a growth spurt and he now needs more at each feeding...or you can try the baby crack machine, my son will sleep more soundly when i have that on...

good luck to you.. we just are going through the same thing with our 4 and a half month old and we noticed if we give him 4 extra ounces before he goes to bed he sleeps much better..

  • your baby is hungry and all babies are different.  You shouldn't even be trying sleep training or breaking habits until they are 6mths

  • I am already giving 7 oz at bed...sometimes he takes it all....sometimes he falls asleep before its done.......either way he still wakes up.  Maybe I should try an earlier bedtime.  6:30 seems SO early though!!!

  • DD went thorough about 2 weeks where she was waking again EVERY 3 hours to eat just recently. Only the last 3 nights has she again dropped the 10/11 pm feeding (knocking VERY LOUD on wood). Also now that she has gotten past that point, she is eating very little at her other 2 wakeups, so I am thinking it was a growth spurt and it may be over (fingers crossed).

The only thing I will be doingto encourage her to drop those 2 feedings are trying to shorten the length each time. That seems to work for some people. But really though, if she needs to eat, I'm gonna feed her, and that's all.

I honestly just think every baby is different, and we all get the right baby for us, whatever that is!

  • When DS was nearing 3 months old he was sleeping 5 to 6 hour stretches and sometimes 8.  Well now he's up every 3 to 4 hours during the night wanting to eat.  We're just going with it and we'll work on it after he's 6 months.  We do try to comfort him first before feeding him.  Sometimes he will fall right back asleep.  Usually he wants to eat though.

  • Man, I am so glad I am not alone. I was just saying to my DH I dont know why our little girl is now waking up at 2 am. She was STTN then just this past week she has been waking at about 2 am/3 am. She gets her bath at 7 and then falls alseep by 8 pm ...wakes up around 11ish where she takes any where from 4 to 5 oz and goes to sleep. Not to mention we started her on a low dose of cereal because of her intake on formula, and what I thought would help her stay alseep she doesnt. Our little one is 15 weeks so almost 4 months and I am just glad to see that I am not the only one and that this indeed may be a growth spurt!
  • I know when my DS wakes during the night, it's to eat.  Whether it is once, which I love, or three times... he always eats, it's never just comfort sucking, he always fills up.  I know my DS went through a growth spurt a few days ago, he might be going through one as well.  I would suggest feeding if he is waking up, I know it stinks!  Good luck.
