I don't mean to, so no one post the dead horse picture. I'll be sad. ![]()
The comment from Sarah_frm_texas (I'm sure I misspelled her SN) got me so upset. And there were people who agreed with her.
Just because its not acceptable to outwardly discriminate again racial minorities doesn't mean that racism is not alive and well. Its called institutionalize racism and its more apparent, than many of you know.
Why are African Americans grossly under-represented in college and university populations but grossly over represented in prison populations? Do you think that was the chosen path? Maybe a coincidence? Why is there such a huge difference the test scores between 'urban' and white school even within the public education system? Ever heard of racial profiling?
Where are you from that you have not witnessed racism? Is it just who you choose to associate with? How can you not think that racism isn't still a huge issue in the US today? I don't even want to relate this to Obama.
Ok. Vent over.
Re: Beating a dead horse...NAY!
i agree with you on a lot of what you said, but am curious if you are saying racial profiling is the reason for the discrepancy between test scores or if you are bringing them up as seperate issues.
I don't have to go far to see racism here in Oklahoma. Not even outside of my family, which makes me really sad. I remember when I was a senior in high school, my dad got really pissed off because when he came to visit me I was hugging my black (he was actually 1/2 black) friend goodbye.
I don't even know how many times I've had to tell him and my mom to not use the n word around me or my daughter, and it is actually to the point that they'll stop seeing her very soon if they don't listen to me.
The thing is though, in public you would have no idea how racist they actually are, and I think it is more widespread in society than a lot of people think.
Totally seperate issue.
gotcha. it is sad that even though we know these issues exist, there really hasn't been much done to remedy the situation. although, how do you fix the demographics in prison and college? i don't really know... but i do know we could certainly redo our standardized testing so that all populations can perform equally on them. (or just do away with them all together, i hate standardized testing)
what are you blaming then? Racism? How so? I want to know exactly how racism keeps african americans out of college? Are you telling me that their are applications being denied due to color?
such a large siggy.
There are quotas schools have with minorities. It happens.
The problems aren't necc with people getting denied college entrance due to color. There are racial issues that go deeper than that. African Americans are denied as good of an education from day one. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and got an excellent education...yet on some areas on the South Side of the city the schools are dangerous -- forget them being 'good.' And these are all public schools.
No. I'm saying to some college isn't even an option or a thought. And I'm not suggesting a solution. I'm saying the problem EXISTS. Which according to you, its not a big deal anymore.
Gracie - it's called Proud to be American (or something like that). Its at the bottom of this page or the top of page 2.
What?
Please explain further.
I shorten my siggy for you. It was time for Bill to go anyways.
I can walk next door to my IL's to see & hear it. GMIL always comments on how wonderful it is to see a light haired/skinned baby & not a dark skinned one when reffering to DD & her cousins. Or the day that FIL, DH & I where watching a movie & FIL kept calling one of the black characters the "N Word" the whole time.
like he was saying would you like some strawberries?
There is no point in arguing with them. They are all far too gone to even come back at this point. However, when DD is old enough I will have to speak up.
Doh! I was wondering what the hell she was talking about. And here I shorten my siggy for her and everything.
Must.Take.Nap.
Hey, I hope no hard feeling today ABMcKinney.
It most definitely exists! I've heard many comments against Mexican-Americans from my family and friends in Texas, though they wouldn't consider themselves racist because they "have black friends" and "do good things for the Mexicans."
Twice since I've lived in Indiana I've heard the phrase "Jew you down."
It exists in both blatant and much more subtle forms like breezey has mentioned in her op. Minorities most definitely have a tougher road in this country than white people - we tend to call it "socioeconomics" and pass it off as an opportunity for the American Dream to come to fruition.
To speak on the other point you brought up: white people commit just as many crimes as blacks. They just have better lawyers, and are better at not getting caught.
And this is straight from my soc text. I don't have the time to google. Sorry.
?
It was rolled up in the whole Michelle-Obama-isn't-proud-of-her-country debate. Pundits and peanuts alike remarked that it was ironic that someone who benefited from the generosity of her country (ie affirmative action) should have any qualms with her country. It was really disgusting.
