TTC After a Loss

intro - ?s

hi to all...thank you for all the support, advice and positive thoughts...i have been reading this board for the past week...unfortunately i too am struggling after a devastating loss...a little backround, 1st BFP 4/14, EDD 12/22, started to bleed 6/1, D&C 6/3 (still have some brown bleeding) - i have followup appt w/dr on fri 6/17...dr told me before my D&C to wait for my AF, then have another AF and i could TTC again...i was wondering what everyone else has heard...ultimately i know this is a convo i will have again w/my dr on friday but if you have anything to share please do!...i would like to do everything i can do to get my AF (exercise/diet/vitamins) and physically move on from this devastating event...emotionally i know this will take time...thank you in advance for the advice, i am very sorry for everyones loss/struggles and i wish everyone the best in the future

I am sorry for your loss. As far as trying again, it really depends on your doctor. We were able to try right away but I had an early natural m/c so it is a different situation. I think that the advice sounds typical for a D&C because your lining needs to build back up.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.  Welcome to the board.  It sounds like your doctor has given you pretty standard advice.  From what I've heard, it's anywhere between 1-3 AF's before being cleared to TTC again.  I don't think there is a lot to do to get AF to come sooner.  Take care of yourself and I would suggest charting so that you are able to know what is going on with your body.

Good luck on your journey and I hope your stay here is short and sweet.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. Everyone here has been told different timeframes, and reasons for how long to wait. I had a natural miscarriage and was told once the bleeding stopped we could TTC again, no need to wait for AF. Definitely talk to your doctor and question the timeframe, if it doesn't make sense to you.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I was told I could start trying right away, but we were not ready at that point. Every doctor is different, listen to what yours tells you and if you want to try earlier than what is prescribed then discuss it with them.

  • thanks to all for taking the time to read my story and respond...i feel like my appt friday cant come soon enough...i have a lot of questions and hope to have a better plan and understanding going forward...if you have any suggestions as to what i should ask for at my appt (testing) please share...thanks again and I hope we all have a good week...lots of positive thoughts being sent to all of you!
  • Julie, I'm so sorry for your loss. It hurts. At our f/u with our RE we were told to wait until the first AF, and we could try TTC again. But due to unforeseen circumstances we were told we would have to wait longer. It sucks and it's frustrating, but in my heart I know it's for the best. Like a PP said, if you dont understand or agree than ask questions. For your apt on Friday, maybe write down your questions? I always feel so rushed when I go that until I started writing down what I wanted to ask, I would come out of there with more questions than when I went in!

    Good luck.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. Welcome to the board.

It sounds like your doctor wants you to wait 2 cycles, which is very normal advice.

I replied to your message on PgAL, but to answer your question about testing, from what I understand most doctors won't test until after 3 losses. My Dr would've tested after my D&C but I chose not to. It is something you can ask your Dr, but just a forewarning.

I have short term memory loss. Do not take it personally if I do not remember you right away.

I'm sorry for your loss.  Welcome to the board!  Time does seem to drag on after a miscarriage, doesn't it?  All of this stuff that's out of our control, and all we want is to get back to normal again (whatever "normal" is).

From what I understand, standard protocol for most doctors is no fertility or genetic testing until 2 or 3 consecutive losses.  The best advice I can give you is to make sure you understand everything your doctor tells you, including the reasons behind any tests (or why he's not recommending testing) and orders to wait to TTC.  I must have repeated back to my doctor several times everything he told me, just to make sure I had it right and that I understood.

I hope Friday comes quickly for you!

  • Sorry for your loss.

Welcome to the board. We had pretty similar unfortunate circumstances. I was told by my dr. to wait one cycle before we start TTC. My D&C was 5/27 and I am still waiting for AF to return, which I have learned is different for everyone. I few days ago I asked my dr. at my follow up apt. if there was anything I could do to speed AF along and he said no. If you are feeling up to it definitely exercise but I don't think it will bring on AF any faster. I was also told to keep taking the prenatals.

    Hope this helps. GL!

I'm sorry for your loss.  I had a D&C with my first m/c, and I was told that I could TTC again after one normal cycle/AF.

  • THANK YOU TO ALL!!!!!

Theresa...i took notes and added to my questions for my appt - i took no offense to the STD testing, my dr does this routinely during the very beginning of every pregnancy but i will clarrify that mycoplasma/ureaplasma was included - i did have my thyroid levels checked before we started to TTC just bc i know it is a very underdiagnosed condition...i will ask questions and i look forward to understanding more about this and confidently move forward in the right direction

Thanks again to everyone and best wishes!!!
