I am looking for insight from others if they have experienced a c-section incision that is not healing properly.
I have always had trouble with my incision. Two weeks post surgery it had a yeast infection and doctor prescribed a steroid cream to apply to the incision which helped some but never completely. My 4 week appt the incision still is not healing. This week was my 6 week appt and I was really hoping everything would go well and I would be released but nope, the incision is still not closed and the infection has returned. I have to go back in one month.
I treat the incision as instructed: every morning I wash it with soap and water in the shower. I then make sure to dry it, apply the cream and then a pantyliner or something similar over the incision because it oozes fluid. I re-apply the cream at night before bed.
Well my family is not happy and think I should get a second opinion. My question is there anything more that can be done or do I have to let my body heal on its own?
Has anyone had a similar experience? I never tell my family how uncomfortable and painful it is because they would worry more. I just want this to be over and done. Thanks in advance.
Re: Need advice - CS incision not healing
Oh Girl!!! Get a second opinion asap!!
I'm 12weeks 1 day pp right now, and I am ALMOST healed... after the first 6 weeks I had been into my OB every single week, sometimes more than once and on 2 different antibiotics to clear up an infection I had in the incision. I had a huge growth of what appeared to be scar tissue, but it was popping up along my incision and finally at 6 weeks pp, my OB said, I'll send you to a surgeon for another opinion. That surgeon used silver nitrate to burn off the growth and found a HUGE hole under it. From that day forward, I began receiving daily nurses visits to my home. The nurses pack my incision with an algaecyte (kills infection) and then use a foam dressing to catch any drainage. It's totally disgusting. I'm afraid if I hadn't been persistant in going back to my OB each time I saw a slight change, he would've passed it off for longer. You're in my thoughts and prayers, no one should have to deal with this!!
I agree, get a second opinion or see if there is a wound clinic in your area where you can get treatment.
I am a wound care RN and we see many patients who have dehisced (reopened) incisions from C-sections and other abdominal surgeries. Most OB's don't know how to do wound care, so you need a referral to a surgeon or wound care specialist who does. By 6 weeks postpartum, your incision should be healed by now, but if it's infected it will not heal until it has been properly treated.
Has it been cultured? If so, are you on the appropriate antbiotics?
As the previous poster said, sometimes we use alginate and foam dressings to heavily draining wounds to absorb the drainage. Your incision will probably need to be packed with a special dressing so it can heal from the inside out.
