Let's talk baby food steamers

I don't usually post here, but pedi says DS is ready for solids, and I'm not into all the preservatives in commercial baby food, or the chemicals in the glass/plastic jars.

Since I SAH, I had planned to just make it at home with one of those steamer/processors. I like the Beaba, but as I said, I SAH, so I'd like something cheaper if possible.

Reccommend me a good one?  The Kalorik seems to be a good contender, but I want mom approval. :)

...no thanks to my PCOS (Dx 2006,though should've been dx during maybe the Clinton years).

P/SAIF always welcome, especially if you share your sticky baby dust! **Looking to buy some gently used, one size Fuzzibunz. PM/Page me if you're selling. Thanks!**

Re: Let's talk baby food steamers

  • I always just used my regular steamer.  I have one from Pampered Chef that goes in the microwave and then a regular metal one that goes in a pot.  Then I used my normal food processor or immersion blender.  There's no need to buy a special baby steamer.  I also recommend reading up on "baby led weaning" where you give them manageable foods to eat at their own pace and skip over the pureed stage.

ETA:  Make sure you are comfortable with starting solids.  I'm not sure your LOs exact age but solids the first year are just for practice so no need to start early.  We waited until 6 months both times.  DS2 didn't really pick it up more until 7/8 months.

  • I made all of DS's food and didn't have any special steamer.  I roasted a lot of things in the oven and then mashed or just steamed in the microwave.  If you haven't already check out wholesomebabyfood.com - it's a fabulous resource!

  • I already have a regular food steamer so I plan to use that and my blender to make baby food. Mine is from Target ( I forget brand) it has 2 steam baskets and can make rice in the bottom if you choose.

  • I just used a steamer insert in my pan or baked and things to make them soft. I have an immersion blender and loved it for making purees and use it a lot for soups for myself.
