Nipple pain when BFing - only on one side

For the past couple days my left nipple has been extremely painful when DS is nursing.  I've met with an LC and she showed me how to help him latch properly.  I'm able to get him to latch pain free on the right side, but for some odd reason the left side really hurts.   I think he is latching properly on the left side because I had the LC watch and make sure it looked correct.  Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas what could be causing pain on only one side?

  • I had the same issue with my DS. It would hurt and then I realized I had a clogged duct (OUCH with a big WTF). I treated it with a warm compress and kept nursing and thankfully it went away. He is latching correctly and at times just lazy and wants to pacify himself. He could be latching in an angle sucking only part of your nipple? I could be wrong, just a guess.

I had pain on my right side only because my right nipple is shorter. I had toe-curling pain for weeks...I think it was better by 3-4 weeks out.

This. I suffered for almost a week before I realized my breast felt lumpy and still a little full  after feedings. It's still a little tender a day later, but I felt immediate relief. It was horrible.

  • I had the same thing with my DS... Terrible pain on the left nipple.  A couple of things my LC suggested: 1. Have him start on the right nipple first for awhile.  He might be a bit aggressive with the first side so give your left side a break. 2. Make sure he is very close.  I used to read a book when nursing and get distracted.  Come to find out he was tugging really hard to get the breast back into his mouth and I didn't even notice. 3. Make sure he's completely un-latched before taking your breast away.

I also used Medela's Lanolin cream after feedings and boy did that make it feel better.

Oh my gosh! Mine on the left side is shorter and it always hurts when he first latches (and sometimes during the feeding as well), I didn't even realize that could be why! Thanks for clueing me in.  He's 6 weeks and it still hurts, so I guess I'll work at keeping him closer and see if that helps.

  • I have a really unique issue with my right nipple, I'm not sure if it's what is going on with you but I never heard of this before I was diagnosed! I have Raynaud's Disease in my right nipple, only brought on my breast feeding and pumping. I thought I was dealing with yeast issues at first, and went to doctor after doctor and finally the LC did some research and found the information on Raynauds and breast feeding.

My only symptom was the extreme pain in my nipple while nursing/pumping. Then when she went down the list of other symptoms, I had those too. My nipple is purple when lo is done feeding, and eventually it is just white looking because of lack of proper blood flow to it.

Not sure if any of that is helpful. But, it's always good to know!

Thank you for all the information.  I tried the warm compress today and I'll keep trying it to see if it brings some relief.  I'm also trying to massage around the nipple to see if that helps at all.

Oh my!  I'm glad to hear you were able to find out what was exactly causing the pain.  I too was thinking maybe it was a yeast infection, but it is good to know that it could be something as Raynaud's since you would never think that could be causing only nipple pain.
