Reviews - Potomac vs Alexandria hospitals

Hello ladies =) I don't post here often but hoped you could help!

These hospitals are my two main options for giving birth. My current OB delivers at Potomac, but I have not been hearing good things about the hospital (in general) at all. The other option is Alexandria, I have an appointment Friday with an OB who delivers there to see if I might want to switch, but wouldn't mind some additional opinions from ladies who have delivered at either hospital.

I only moved to the area in November so I don't have too much to go on myself. The current OB is okay...don't love but don't hate either.

Re: Reviews - Potomac vs Alexandria hospitals

  • Hi! I wish I could help you, but I don't know much about Potomac Hospital. I did notice that you and I are both due in November! Yay November babies! This is my first baby, so I don't have a lot of information to go off...hopefully some others here will jump in with suggestions.

Anyway, I am planning to deliver at Inova Alexandria.  My current OB delivers there and offers a class that includes a tour of their birthing suites. I can't sign up for the class for another month or so, but I'm looking forward to it.

GL and maybe I'll see you around!

  • I delivered at Inova Alexandria with a great practice. The nurses were all helpful and encouraging. I had a med-free birth and they were very complementary of me and never suggested meds or anything.

It is a rather small hospital I think compared to most hospitals. But the care I received was excellent. One of the best things was that DH and I were put in a two-bed room so that he could sleep comfortably overnight. I think it was the only one. Labor and Delivery was pretty dead for most of the time I was there since I delivered on a Sunday morning.

It was a great experience for the most part. I don't know much about Potomac.

  • I delivered at Potomac and had a fantastic experience.  My nurses and OB were really laid back, and despite the fact that I spent 8 hours at 3cm during my induction, they didn't seem concerned at all.  Everyone was super nice, the rooms were private, and it was just a quiet, calm experience.  10x better than delivering at Mary Washington down in Fredericksburg.  DD had jaundice and the nursery staff was fantastic about letting me come down to BF her and didn't push formula.  They let us take her and her bili light into our room as well.

ETA:  Potomac hospital itself I've heard pretty bad things about.  I've never heard a bad word about L&D though.

I second this. I'm even having another delivery at Inova Alexandria in July because they were awesome.

  • I agree with the OP about Potomac Hospital.  I have only been in the area for a year and a half and I had heard negative things about it in general but nothing specific.  My OB practice, which I love, delivered there so I thought I'd give it a shot.  I had a wonderful experience.  Every nurse in L&D was spectacular.  I had a issue with my epi where the anesthesia tech didn't do it right.  But the actual anesthesiologist came in and re-did it perfectly and was awesome throughout the whole process (I had to have an emergency c-section) talking and joking with me.  The nurses in post-partum were just as nice and extremely helpful.  I think I had one who was a bit pushy, but it was just for one shift.  I highly recommend Potomac  : )
