I have to tell those of you who were like me (good moms BTW) who think their kids don't like water.
My DD still had bottles of milk up to her first dental appointment at 16 1/4 months. She was drinking lots of milk, she loved the stuff. She wouldn't drink straight water, make a nasty face, let it fall out of her mouth, even though I drink lots of water myself. So, I was letting her have Crystal Light (it's Splenda).
Once we took the bottle away she stopped ALL milk consumption. She still acted like water was poison. I let her have Crystal Light. She drank TONS. She was drinking so much that I actually thought I would need to stop cloth diapering her because I couldn't maintain a dry diaper with cloth she was peeing so much.
Her stool became watery too. We saw the pedi. Long story short - duh, any artificial sugar is NOT cool. It acts as a water retenter. Her bowels were pulling water in. They were all liquid :-(
This has been a hell I will not repeat with the next LO. Water and milk have been the only options the past 3 days. The first day SUCKED. Horrible! She cried, screamed, threw the sippies. Day 3 she drank her whole sippy of milk at dinner and has been drinking water all day.
I WILL NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE next time. Water and milk are the ONLY options!
ETA: This post isn't about WHY I chose Crystal Light. It's what DH and I drink (though not now so that our drinks are no different than DDs). The first couple responses act like we PICKED it special for DD. Come on, really. The point of the post is that I fell for thinking she didn't like water when really, I was just putting something out there.
Re: I thought my kid didn't like water (to drink)...
We were asked to cut ALL juice before the pedi realized I was giving CL. We were giving One cup of fortified OJ in the AM since DD would no longer drink milk.
I just went and checked. I thought Crystal Light was Splenda. I was wrong and you are right, it's Aspartame. I am so embarrassed and horrified at what I was giving DD in her sippy. The truth is, it took me 3 days to break the flavor habit. It's done. She drank a whole sippy of milk at dinner and that was the final thing I wanted. She finally started drinking water yesterday.
Matthew will drinks water like it is going out of style. I don't like water so I find his facination with it odd. Have you given her any juices? I make limeaide, pineapple juice, mango juice (mom makes this one) and orange juice for him. We give him store bought juices as well but I like making my own stuff.
my read shelf:
No, see we were told to cut all juice. It's cool though. 3 days and now she drinks water and milk only. They are the only options and it's all DH and I are drinking as well. Well, also coffee. There are days when the only thing I drink from sun up to sum down are coffee.
If anyone tries to take my coffee away I would stab them.
Every morning I have 2-3 cups of coffee while also drinking a coke zero. If I do not have that combo everyone better hide. I've cut back on coffee but I started drinking it when I was 4. My grandma would give me a glass of milk with 1 teaspoon of Nescafe & 2 tablespoons of sugar every morning. I would drink 2 or 3 glasses of that every day.
