I went to lunch with a girlfriend... ordered some spring rolls, when she quickly looked up and asked - "without the sprouts please"
First I didn't know about the e coli scare, but besides that, she said there is a bacteria that is potentially harmful to the baby.
WHAT!?! I hadn't heard this one.

Hmmm...that's interesting. I've never heard of that but I don't eat sprouts either, so maybe that is why.
Good thing your friend was there to warn you!
Is it wrong that this makes me feel justified in having hated bean sprouts my entire life? Evil little things...
Seriously, though, I'd heard years ago that bean sprouts in salad bars were to be avoided by all people (pregnant and non-pregnant alike) because they frequently carry bacteria that make people ill.
"bean sprouts are subject to contamination by harmful bacteria. Raw bean sprouts have been known to carry E. coli and Salmonella. If contamination does occur, it happens in the beginning of the planting stage before the bean even sprouts. Homegrown beans are not any safer to eat because they can still become contaminated. If not washed or cooked thoroughly, you can become severely ill. Pregnant women are especially at risk because of a potentially weakened immune system unable to fight the bacteria and the ability to get sick fairly easily."
However, if you fully cook them, they are fine.
I love bean sprouts, so I very thoroughly cook them before putting them into my homemade eggrolls. Alfalfa sprouts cause the same risks, but they are awful when cooked.
