Any hair dressers out there? Keratin question

Does anyone know of any safe alternatives to La Braziliana keratin treatments? I have very very curly hair and in the last month, it's become not only unruly but extremely frizzy, messy, poofy and lots of grays are peaking through! Even my beloved Wen isn't working for me! Nor are my Diva products.

My dr said highlights and color are ok but I know the last (and first) time I had the keratin treatment,  the salon asked me when booking the appointment if I was pregnant or nursing.

  • I am sure that the amount of formaldehyde that is in Keratin treatments as well as any chemical straighteners are unsafe during preganancy and can be harmful to you as well as baby,. I'm sorry but this should wait. Try using a serum instead of using the chemical straightener or look into a flat iron. Chi has a great one but can be about 100.00.

Hope this helps you with your decision. :)

  • I'm sorry, thank you for your response, but I think you read my post wrong. I'm not looking for validation on getting this treatment done. i'm looking for a safer alternative-- something natural, plant-based, etc.

and a flat iron wouldn't do anything for me with this weather. it'll look great for 2 minutes and then baam! plus, I don't want to straighten my hair. Although people use it for that purpose, I just use it as a de-frizzer. Thanks anyways!

  • About a month ago I bought the Organix Brazilian Keratin Therapy 30 day treatment but I haven't used it yet.  It's certified formaldehyde free but I haven't asked my doctor whether or not the other ingredients are safe.  Nothing looks harmful to me but half of the ingredients I can't even pronounce so who knows!

  • I'd ask your hairdresser for suggestions.  In my book nothing beats in the Brazilian Blowout, but I agree w/ you and have been avoiding it since we got our BFP.  My stylist suggested a deep conditioning treatment @ my last visit.  I did it and it was great, but nothing close to the Brazilian.

I looked up alternatives and this is what I found (I haven't looked into any of these in detail to determine if they are effective and/or safe for pregnant women):

You may want to look into this a little further before using, as many of the keratin products do not contain formaldehyde but do contain a product that is one molecule off (or something, don't quote me, it's been a few months since I did the research). The Brazilian Blowout people keep maintaining that their product is formaldehyde free, etc etc but the product it contains that is similar to formaldehyde does seem to be causing the same issues and safety risks as actual formaldehyde. I truly don't know how accurate all of that is, but it is definitely something to look into.

Believe me, I mourn the loss of the brazilian straighteners. The BB was the only thing I've ever (ever ever ever) found that tames my insane head of hair.

Sorry, OP, I don't have any suggestions for you. I need help, too! GL.

Thanks for the info!  I'll definitely look into that more before using.

Hi, I am a hairstylist. ENJOY has a new treatment that is 100% formaldehyde free. There is no smell or toxins that come off as it is done & it leaves the hair very soft & smooth. I think you would be happy with it. If you have any questions just let me know. Also, I would love to hear what you end up doing.

  • Hey hey .. I'm a hair stylist and I would say skip it. Your hair may be getting immune to the amazing Wen product. Try using a heavy "Glass drop" or a wax when you hair is already dry... The salon I work at will move clients to the back of the salon during a Braziliana so the KU stylist wont be breathing it.
  • When I was on the phone with Aveda to change my appointment they had a message playing about some chemical straightening thing. (I don't think they used the words chemical - but it said it uses natural ingredients - they seem to be more "green" about things so you may want to check them out)

I bought a BB from a site like groupon and I'm going to have to hope that they will refund it.

  • I'm a cosmetologist and Bio Ionic has a semi-perminant straightener for virgin or color treated hair that can be used as a defrizzer, curl relaxer or straightener, depending on how long it is left on the hair.  It only lasts about 3 months,so you won't be locked into anything if you decide you don't like it.  It should NOT be applied to the scalp, so you would only have to worry about fumes.  Of course, you should talk to your doctor, but you you only leave it on the hair to defrizz for 5 minutes, I wouldn't personally be too concerned.
