We have always done BLWing with DD and she is fantastic at it. Up until a few weeks ago she would eat just about anything we have put in front of her. Now though she has decided she will only eat a few select items! No matter what we try she will just spit out or throw anything else. It has nothing to do with being full or playing because she will eat all of the "approved" item and often sign for more....the other items on her plate she will throw as soon as she sees them or taste it once, spit it out & throw.
Typical for this age or is she showing signs of being one of those crazy picky eaters?!I am still giving her a broad range of foods for her meals (though I try to make sure at least one thing on her plate is an "approved" food).
It is getting hard though! All she will eat lately is an egg for breakfast (no oatmeal, yogurt, pancake covered bannanas, or homemade wheat waffles). She will only eat chicken as a meat now (she used to love tofu but no longer) and veggies have been reduced to broccoli or spinach. Fruits are down to grapes, blueberries, peaches, and mangos. That.is.it!
DH and I eat a huge variety of items and she has been exposed to everything (curry used to be a huge hit)! I always thought picky eaters were made..but now I'm starting to wonder!
Re: Typical phase or signs of a picky eater?
Picky toddler eaters are not made. Many, if not most toddlers and preschoolers go through picky stages that can last months or years. It is about controlling what goes in their mouth, since there are truly very few things in their life at that stage that they have control over.
My daughter was the same way (she ate avocado, red pepper, hummus, cous cous, etc) until she was about 13 months old, and then her list of foods that she would eat dropped dramatically. Slowly, she is willing to taste or lick new foods again. And every so often she chooses to add new foods on her own. I expect it to improve with time. There are healthy things I know she will eat that are in the meal rotation every week and there is always at least one questionable item on her plate every night. I offer food, she decides what to eat. No battles.
My son is a little less picky and more willing to try things, but he went from a hoover that would eat anything to picking and choosing foods around 14 or 15 months, I think.
IMO, a child remains a picky eater for life when their families continue catering to them for the long haul and stop encouraging them to try new things. There are certainly some kids with palette or texture issues, but there are also kids who are just "allowed" to picky for so long because parents give up on getting them to try new things when they are old enough to be out of the "control" stage.
ditto PPs
probably a very typical phase. we continue to offer a variety of foods - usually at least 3 things for each meal. He eats what he eats. We usually try to get him to take at least a few bites of each thing before he can have more of the favored things, but at a younger age, this might not work. Also, i found that sneaking veggies or shredded meat into mac and cheese works wonders. So if there are things she likes, such as eggs, then try mixing some stuff in with it. She might try to pick it out, but odds are she will end up eating at least some.
