Question about your 6 week pp check up..

I had mine yesterday and my midwife didn't "check" anything.  I had a tiny paper cut type tear but no stitches this time and my delivery went great, but I assumed she would at least check my belly and feel my uterus, or do some kind of vaginal exam and she didn't.  I remember all of the above being checked with my first, but then again I tore and needed stitches so I don't know if thats why or not.  I'm just wondering if its normal for them not to check anything at all.

I didn't even think to ask, we were in the room talking for nearly an hour about my birth experience and our issues with reflux/gas that the whole thing totally slipped my mind..plus I had a fussy baby with me.  I'm sure everything is fine, I had minimal soreness and bleeding to begin with after the birth and I've been able to have sex with no issues but I am wondering if I should call and ask if she meant to do that or not.  She had originally told me to come back after 2 weeks pp and then 6 weeks pp but my insurance would only cover 6 weeks pp, so I'm wondering if she got confused and thought she had already seen me before (although I doubt it by our conversations and her reaction to seeing the baby again).

Re: Question about your 6 week pp check up..

  • My OB checked to make sure I was healed, checked that my cervix was closed and back in its normal position and she checked that my uterus had shrunk back to its normal size. I would think those are all standard/important parts of the checkup.

My OB didn't check either-I had a vag delivery.  She was more concerned with birth control options.

  • I had a 4 weeks check up and he didn't do an exam-we just talked.  If I had decided on the pill that would have been it.  However, I got an IUD, so he placed it at 6 weeks.

  • Mine only checked my cervix and the repair of the tear
  • Thanks ladies.  I figured my MW is much more relaxed than my old OB, but at least now I know other people had the same thing going on..she was more concerned about BC as well, lol.

  • That's kinda weird. Maybe because it was your 2nd? I had a check up at 1wk and they removed the staples, check the incision but nothing else. At my 6wk the Nurse Practioner (whom I liked a heck of a lot better than the Drs) checked the incision, did a pap, and checked my uterus and cervix. I liked that they were so thorough, even if the examination part wasnt much fun.
