Did all of you have the nasal bone measured at your NT scan?

Because we didn't. I have never heard of that before but I have only had 1 NT scan between the 2 pregnancies. That is a further diagnostic for downs right? Is that common to have that measured? All the tech measured was the the nuchal fold.

Re: Did all of you have the nasal bone measured at your NT scan?

  • My u/s tech just checked that it was there, but didn't take any actual measurements.  She took measurements of the nuchal fold, though (in triplicate so they could be averaged).  My understanding is the if the nasal bone is absent and the average nuchal fold measurement is above a certain number, that can be a risk factor for Down's or any of the other chromosomal abnormalities that they test for in this screen (i.e., Trisomy 18 and 13).  But your actual risk factor can't be calculated without the blood test results.

  • Exactly what PP said.  My u/s tech only advised me that the nasal bone was present.  As far as I'm aware, she didn't measure it.

  • My experience was the same as with the previous posters, my Dr checked that it was there and that everything looked good. The only measurments I know that he took was the neck measurement and he measured the length of the baby.

  • We didn't.  She didn't even mention it at all.

  • i specifically asked our tech about it, and she said they do not measure it.
  • Our tech did the same as others, just checked to see if it was there.  They said that a missing one during the NT scan would change the statistics of down syndrome.

  • On the sheet they gave me with all the measurements, they just mark the nasal bone as absent or present. The genetics counselor told me that the presence of the bone decreases the chance of having a DS baby to less than 1% regardless of other factors.

  • I just gad my NT Scan at 11w3d.  She did the NT measurement (1.6mm), but didn't mention the nasal bone.  SInce I had a NT Scan with DS at 13w3d, I knew to ask about it.  She said that when the NT scan is done early (like this one),  it may be too early to see it.  But, since I asked her, she did point it out to me.  I have never heard of a measurement for that, though, just whether or not it was present.

mine measured the nuchal fold, fetal ear (this can also give you a sign of Down Syndrome) and nasal bone.

I just had my NT scan this morning.  The tech said they were just looking at the fold measurement and for the presence of the nasal bone.  According to the tech, the nasal bone does not typically appear until later with Downs babies.  She also said that if the nasal bone is present and the fold measurement looks good then there is a 90 something percent chance that everything is fine.

  • My NT scan lasted about 45 minutes. The nuchal fold measured 1.0 but when I told my regular OB the next day (he didn't get the results yet and I had my monthly appointment) he asked if they saw the nasal bone. I said, well, they didn't say they didn't. He said that we should assume they did if they didn't mention it to us... so of of course, my mind wandered but from what i read online, it seems that it's not as much of a marker as the nuchal fold and that in some cases, the nasal bone develops late even in the healthiest of babies.

  • My doctor didn't measure the nasal bone, but commented that it looked "small" but at least it was present.

This combined with the thick nuchal fold and blood test results is why we went ahead and scheduled CVS on Monday.

I'm guessing that if the nuchal fold is fine and the nasal bone is present, there's no real reason to measure it.

  • My tech did measure it, but the only reason I know is because she gave us a CD with all the measurements on there. She sends the files to the specialist who reads the ultrasound tomorrow or Monday.

  • My tech didn't mention it at all but took the measurement of the nuchal fold.  I read about it later on-line and called the doctor's office and they told me they wouldn't have been able to take the measurement and send me to have blood work if it wasn't present.
