XP: What to do about DCP and PTing DS

We met with his teacher and she basically told me he's not ready. (DS is 2 and a half)

We told her our plan was to do the 3 day PT method in July and we went over what it was, how we would use it, and what we hope the outcome would be. His teacher said that they look for more indicators of readiness such as saying when they're wet or have pooped (he tells us when he poops....not so much when he pees), taking off and pulling up shorts, and staying dry for longer periods of time (which he does...most mornings he wakes up dry and will usually be dry once or twice when we go to change him during the day).

So now, I don't know what to do. Do we try the method in July, see how it goes and if he does well, tell the DCP that method worked for us and that we expect him to be in diapers? Or do we just wait for him to give us more indicators that his interested. One of the things we're up against is that we're having baby #2 at the end of November, and while we know its definitely manageable to have two in diapers, we would love to not!

Any advice would be much appreciated! TIA!

Re: XP: What to do about DCP and PTing DS

  • Honestly - I would care less what my DCP thought.

I PTd DD over Memorial Day weekend.  She never told me when she peed, sometimes would tell me when she pooped, and she stays dry at night and at naps and only wets about every 2 hours.  She is 26 months.  So according to your DCP - my DD wasn't ready!

Either way - the Friday before we trained I told DCP we were training and that we would not be allowing diapers anymore if it worked.  We brought her to school on Tuesday - told them it worked and that we were expecting them to follow our wishes.  We brought in extra clothes.  The first day she had 2 accidents, the second day she had 1 accident and then she had 1 accident this week - DCP has been fine!

I would trust your instincts and follow the plan that works for your family!

Remember - day care workers do a hard job for very little money - Potty training makes their job harder - so they naturally shy away from it.  But - you are the Mom and everything about your child is your decision!

  • E's DCP is awesome. Once we start PTing, they will follow our & E's lead on it all. They allow for 3 accidents in 1 day and after the 3rd, they put a diaper on. They will also call us after the 3rd accident that day and tell us they will be using the diapers. We are probably going to start in July as well, not sure if we are going to do the 3 day method or something else.

Thanks for your input! That was kinda the plan that we have for DS and will probably still stick to that but maybe wait until August to try the 3day PT. Send me some positive PT vibes Smile

Diapers are easier. She probably doesn't want the hassle. Do you have the option of keeping him home longer than 3 days, such as a week, to make sure it "works" and you won't have to worry about her saying "He had 2 accidents so we're using diapers until he stays dry for 3 days" or something like that?

Yeah we may try to stay and extra two or three days at home if it doesn't totally click. And I know, even though once he's PT he might have an accident every once in awhile...just happens. I dunno I guess I just wish it had gone...differently.
