March 2011 Moms

anyone else's LO have a heart murmur?

We are going to a cardiologist next Weds to see what exactly what it is.  I guess most are innocent and can correct themselves and are very common so I thought I'd post to see how common they might really be.  So, anyone else?

PS-T & P for my LO please, I so hope it's innocent.

Re: anyone else's LO have a heart murmur?

  • I know how stressful that can be.  Hopefully it will correct itself.  Just wanted to send good vibes your way.  Be sure to keep us posted.

  • It was discovered DS had a heart murmur at 4-5weeks old. We went to a pediatric cardiologist who ran some tests and said it looked like an innocent murmur. She was having issues looking at one of the holes in his heart (every newborn has these) but that it looked like it had closed up already. She said his murmur was caused by the flow between chambers was moving more blood than a normal rate but it was so slightly elevated that it wasn't a concern.

  • Our pediatrician discovered DS had one at his 2 month check up. He had a chest x-ray, ECHO and EKG done. Everything looked normal. I guess we'll see next week at his 4 month check up if it's still there or has corrected itself. Good luck!

  • LO has weight checks since he was early and they found a heart murmur at 3.5 weeks. We scheduled an appointment for the cardiologist but before our appointment we had our 1 month checkup (5 weeks) and it had resolved itself by then so she had us cancel our appointment. It was still fine at his 2 month too. My two nieces had the exact same thing so when I heard that I felt a little less worried. My thoughts are with you that is it just innocent too!

  • We discovered one at DS one month check up.  He went to cardiologist which was a slightly tramatic experience for him. Getting all the stickers in place for EKG was challenging to say the least.  Long story short, by his two month appointment his pedi couldn't even hear the mumur any longer.  Cardiologist told me they are very common and most outgrow by six months.  GL!

My DD has a murmur.  She has a small hole in her heart.  It was traumatizing to find out, but now that we are educated about it, it's not so bad.  It will probably close on its own, but if not it will mean open heart surgery when she's a toddler.  Yikes!  I hope yours is innocent!  The worst was the testing...she screamed through the whole thing and they almost had to sedate her for the echo, but I finally got her to sleep so she would lay still.  It was terrible!  Be prepared for lots of crying.  I comfort nursed her for almost an hour just to calm her down.  Poor little dear.  She's perfectly healthy otherwise and has no symptoms.  Her life hasn't been affected at all!  She's gaining weight like a champ, sleeping well, etc., so having a murmur isn't the worst ailment a baby can have.  The doc said even if she needs surgery she'll still lead a perfectly normal life...aka, play sports, etc.

Youe LO will be in my thoughts.

My LO had one at her 2 month, the pedi did not recommend for us to go to a cardiologist he said it's really common and will mostly resolve itself. Now I feel like a terrible mom that LO didn't get further testing!

  • First~ sending T&P!!

And secondly, My older DS had one.  They are fairly common as the newborn heart doesn't complete development until after birth when it needs to fully function on its own.  Almost all of them go away without any intervention at all, but many docs do the cardiac workup to have a baseline and to compare it later if needed.  With DS (granted this was 8 years ago..) we did the chest x-ray and then followed up once or twice and that was it.

It was scary just thinking that anything can be wrong, but its better to have the evaluation done for peace of mind =)  Good luck!!

  • My DD has a murmur as well. It was very loud when she was born, but has become more faint over time. She had to have an Echocardiogram when she was 4 weeks old, and we discovered that she had 2 holes in heart, rather than just the one that they knew of. She has a tiny hole in the pumping chambers of her heart and the collecting chambers of her heart. My daughter has not had one symptom of a heart mumur aside from the actual murmur.

Heart murmurs are very common, and in most cases they do close up by the time the baby is 1 year old. My daughter is being monitored by a pediatrician every few months (normally in my province a baby is taken care of by the GP), and will continue to be monitored until after her 1st birthday I would imagine.
