speaking of potty training

What age did you start?  I'm hoping to start pt next month when Max is 22 months.  I'd really like him to be PT by the time I go back to work.  Did anyone use the PT method stacie sent out?  (3 day PT)

  • Oh, and did anyone use a potty chair or the seat thingy?  The author of 3 day PT, used a chair, I think.

I'm doing the 3 day PT this weekend (FINGERS CROSSED!!) We have both a chair and seat. She prefers the seat.

  • We have both the seat and the little potty too.  I haven't really talked about it at all, only if he brings it up.  He sometimes asks to sit on it but then immediately says "all done" and wants off.  I have been waiting for him to take an interest himself and so far not much has happened.  I am really curious to hear the responses on this.  This whole thing just sounds soooo overwhelming.

  • Finn was late, like a month before he turned 3, although we had him peeing on the potty before bath every night for like 6 months. It was the rest of it that we waited on. We have the ring that goes on the seat, I feel like the little mini toilet things they sit on and you have to empty are so gross. But that is more my issue than reality :)

  • I have to say that 22 months for a little boy is SUPER early, my boys were nowhere near ready before they turned 2.  Jack potty-trained about a month after he turned 3, which is on the later side, but he was not ready when I tried 4 or 5 months before that.

We are trying to potty-train Ethan this week, and he is 2 years, 9 months...it's going ok.

  • Gavin was 2.5 when we did 3DPT.  Daycare had been doing PT as part of their routine and then his teacher left and it all stopped.  I was pregnant and knew we needed to get serious quick.  His new teacher told me she thought 3DPT was a great idea for him and so I thought we were all set and she would back me up when he returned to school.  Ummm no.  First accident he had, they put him back in a pull up.  When I took his pull ups away from school, they put someone elses on him.  They weren't being consistent about making him go potty and he was having 2-3 accidents a day w/ them and when I asked why, she told me that he wouldn't ask to go... he just went.  Well, yeah lady- he's 2... you have to remind him!  Gah.

So we switched schools.  New school was much better about it and within a month they declared him totally PT and moved him up to the next class.  We were still having poop issues at home but pee was down.

Then Sophie was born.  Chaos.  He started having accidents w/ my parents/IL's while I was still in the hospital.  We chalked it up to being out of his routine.  Then when Sophie was 2 weeks old, he got that weird illness in hip and was basically crippled for 2 weeks.  Back to Pull Ups 100% of the time.  I was so sad.  But then finally, he got back into his routine at school and they insisted on big boy pants and had ZERO accidents.  So then once I started to come out of my fog, we went back to big boy pants at home too.  Still had accidents though and he had still never ever pooped in the potty.  Yes, he pooped in his underwear and didn't care.  So gross.  Bedtime was never an issue for Gavin- the only times he ever wet the bed was when he was sick.  Not sure why, illness effects that, but it does.

Soon after I returned to work and we got back into our new routine, we decided to try out the "Everyone Poops" thing that I described in the earlier post.  I had zero expectations b/c we had tried everything else and NOTHING worked.  But making it a part of his daily routine and telling him that it was normal was apparently all that he needed.

Now, we have maybe had 1 or 2 occasional pee accidents since all that but our pedi told us that they can still have accidents up until they are 5!!!  So be prepared.  I felt like the 3DPT made it sound like it was 3 days and you are done.  Not so much.  This whole process took us 6 months!  I mean, I definitely think it was worthwhile b/c it got me and DH to change our mindset about diapers and to start having to remind him to go.  Which I don't think we ever would have done w/ him in Pull Ups.  But no matter what, PT is huge and every kid is going to have their own sticking point that drives you batty.  And it won't be what you expect.  So try not to get frustrated or discouraged and if you find yourself getting to a point where it feels like a battle then you have to pull back.  Let it go for a week or 2 and go back to Pull Ups- it won't screw everything up regardless of what that book says :-)

  • Oh and we had both the Singing Potty and the potty rings.  He always preferred the potty rings which was just fine w/ me.

  • We started getting C familiar with the potty at 1.  By one and a half we started really working with him because daycare was pt a group at the same time.  By two and a half he was completely trained.  I also must say although we started on the early side it was without pressure and more like this is part of his routine.  It really worked well for us because now I'm only buying diapers for baby girl.

We got both.  We found out early on that H would pee on the potty seat/ring thingy, but was terrified to poop on it.  She would only poop on the potty chair to begin with.  For us, it made life much easier having both.  Although, cleaning out the potty chair when I was in my 1st Tri was horrible.  The duty quickly became DH's. :)
