Let's play: Ask dumb questions, get smart answers

yes, I just made that up.  Do you have dumb questions that you never want to ask but really want to know the answer to?  Let's ask them tonight and try to answer them for each other, judgment free!  Go!

I''ll start:

1. what is with everyone taking old fashioned looking pictures?  I am seeing a TON of it on FB and I don't get it.

2. also, what do the dancing elephants in people's siggies mean?  I think it has something to do with TTC but what?

The pedi said we can scramble egg yolk for C for breakfast. Do I do this the same way I would if I were making it for DH and I? I am sure adding a little milk is ok, but should I add anything else to fluff it up? Also, how can I strain the whites out? This sounds completely dumb, and I know that. I am clearly not a chef.

We are just now starting more textures (and table foods), I'd say you are doing fine. We are introducing a little at a time.

  • I have been waiting for a thread like this!!!!

My dumb question is: Will humidity have any effect on my powdered formula? I don't have central air in my house and we are just starting to get into our reallly hot/humid days. I am going to be pissed if my formula gets ruined. I guess this could also apply to if I need to keep the formula travel containters in a cooling bag?

I had one little section of my travel container go all weird the other day and I am not sure if it's because of humidity?

My brain doesn't really work anymore!

you can put water in eggs to fluff them up.  I would keep milk out at first, since eggs are an allergin and so is dairy.  To seperate the egg from the yolk you crack the egg and then kind of drop it back and forth between the two halves of shell until it seperates.

I think somewhere on the container it should tell you what temps to keep it stored at? It should say what the highest/lowest tolerable temps are.

That sounds simple enough! I was a little leary of adding the milk to fluff but the pedi said a tiny amount here and there was fine (just as long as formula is her primary source of milk). I think I will use water instead though. Seems simpler and she probably won't have eggs often anyway.

I am racking my brain for breakfast food ideas! We tried toast and she despised it.

I would add a little milk, but I've never added anything else for fluffiness. (I guess you could add cream if you want, but I'd do that OR milk; not both.)

To separate the yolk from the white, carefully crack the egg. Then, when you open it, you can "catch" the yolk in one half of the egg shell by sliding it under like a bowl. Pour the white out of the other half of the shell. Slowly and carefully pour the yolk back and forth between the two shell halves a few times, and each time more of the white will drain out of the shell, leaving only the yolk. When you are satisfied that enough of the white has been drained, you can pour the yolk into the pan or into a bowl to complete your prep & cook.

I hope that makes sense. FTR, I've only done it to separate out the *yolk* so I could use only the egg white for healthier cooking for grown-ups.

you don't need a lot of water, like 1/2-1 tbls. but you don't have to add anything either.  Does she like any fruit?  I'll give Katy blueberries, raspberries, peaches, bananas, oatmeal, cherrios, etc.  we usually do fruit in the morning and veggies at night.

Ok, I have 2 dumb questions:

When does feeding solids move from the playing/experimenting stage to eating them for nutrition? I think I have a different opinion on this then most people.

What exactly is the purpose of a mesh feeder?  I get that it's another way to feed a baby, but I'm a bit confused about using it and what to put in it.  I've never used one but I believe it's for trying out new foods and textures while eliminating chocking hazard, like BLW for paranoid people :P  You could but anything in there, steamed apples, peaches, bananas, avacado, etc.  I also saw a suggestion the other day that I thought was brilliant of taking a cube of frozen baby food and putting it in there for them to gnaw on.

  • Oh! I like this thread. I have been wanting to ask 'dumb' question but feared coming off as stupid. I'm curious as to how different gender babies act. For instance, I have a boy and he loves to take all his toys and slam them really hard into things. Even though hes little he can be super ruff. In example, he has a play table that has a lap top on it. He will slam the top down really hard over and over again. I was wondering if girl babies do this also. Or are they a little more soft with their actions?

Okay, that even seems dumb typing it up. But Ill post anyway.

    2. also, what do the dancing elephants in people's siggies mean?  I think it has something to do with TTC but what?

Yeah, I have apps on my iPhone for that. My iPhone takes better pics than my point and shoot. ANd when you upload from your phone, it makes a separate folder for them on FB automatically. This may answer your question? Look out baby 'cause I'm using technology!!!

I bet she'll love it! DS loves his. Like pp said it is a bit cleaner than just sticking the food on the tray as well, although my little guy manages to wipe his face, clothes, side of the high chair and whatever else he can with it, so food still ends up everywhere! haha

  • No one answered yet: when does food become about nutrition instead of just being for fun?! I mean, what I *assume* is that gradually as I give LO more and more solid foods and he stops nursing as often it becomes more about eating for nutrition, but is there a limit? Should he be getting x% of his nutrition from BM (or Formula) by a year old and x% from food? I don't go see the pedi for another month but it seems like he is going down some sort of progressive road but what if I'm doing it wrong? ACK! Oh noes!
    Lookin' Down

    My dumb question:

What's BLW?? I hear people talk about it all the time, but not sure what it is.

Baby led weaning.  you let babies wean themselves by offering finger foods to them so they control what and how much food they want, instead of you deciding how much they eat and what they eat by feeding purees.

however long the night, dawn will break.

Ok, I have 2 dumb questions:

When does feeding solids move from the playing/experimenting stage to eating them for nutrition?

What exactly is the purpose of a mesh feeder?  I get that it's another way to feed a baby, but I'm a bit confused about using it and what to put in it.

I also put frozen cubes of breastmilk in the mesh feeder on hot days, or when M is teething.  He loves his little milksicles, and cries when the mesh feeder is empty.  I have also put frozen pear puree in it.  It keeps him busy for about 20 minutes, and that lets me get a lot done.

No one answered yet: when does food become about nutrition instead of just being for fun?! ACK! Oh noes!
IMO, I don't think they NEED food until they have their molars. Like I said though, I have a different opinion then most people on that. I feel like anything before that is just for fun so I don't stress if they're not getting enough of this or that or the other.
