Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Is my baby just special?

Naptime is beyond frustrating. We are in the process of weaning from the swaddle, so at least one nap a day has at least one arm out.

He wants the pacifier, so I plug him in. Almost immediately, he pulls it out... then fusses. I put it back in and his hands instantly go to his mouth. Repeat 478,000 times over the next 20 minutes until he falls asleep... at least until he wiggles the 2nd arm out of the swaddle around the 45-minute mark and the whole process begins again.

I wish he'd stop flinging the paci out and fussing, or at least start soothing himself with those fingers! Anyone relate????

  • we broke the swaddle at 3 mos. best thing ever. all the fighting and flailing she was doing to break out of it was keeping her awake. but i hear you on the paci thing. i think i had to put her binky back 877695 times last night alone.

  • OMG I could have wrote this post 2 months ago.

You want your paci? Stop taking it out of your mouth then! Silly kids LOL

  • No problems with swaddling but I hear you with the soother thing.  Sometimes I want to just use some tape to hold it in place ;)  (kidding, simmer down people)
  • Have you tried just going without the swaddle altogether?  With us, #1 was a swaddle baby until she was 4.5 months (and then she was too big for all our swaddle blankets!) and when we couldn't keep her in it anymore, we just went straight to sleepers and she was totally fine.  With #2, she would always fight to get out of the swaddle, so one night when she was just a couple weeks old we tried to put her down without it, and she went right out.  Turns out the swaddle was keeping her up!  She was spending so much energy trying to break out, she couldn't sleep.  She hasn't been swaddled since.
  • We had the paci issue until DS started sucking his thumb around 3 months. He hardly uses a paci anymore and it is so much easier for him to get his thumb in his mouth. Oh but that doesn't mean he is a napper. NO WAY! He takes 2 30-45 min. naps a day.
  • i stopped swadleling at 3wks.......was that too early??  eek!

yup...the "pull binky out and scream" game is very popular in my house! :)

  • We just strap DS's arms to his sides with duct tape and wah-la, no more taking out the binky.

  • DS recently started wanting a pacifer, but only if I hold it in his mouth for him.  He's still swaddled, but now with both arms out so the blankets just around his body/legs.  We've recently started putting him in the sleep sack after his midnight feeding and putting him back that way.  Most of the time he asleep by the end of the bottle so it works..
  • I hear ya.  We don't even do the swaddle or at least a full swaddle.  We can only swaddle from the armpits down.  The paci is a bit tricky, but I find that if I tickle her cheek or rub her cheek while I try to put the paci in her mouth, she grabs onto it and will keep it in her mouth for a while.  By the time it falls out she's usually asleep.  Have you tried different types of Pacis to see which will work for him?  She has about 50 pacifiers that we've basically all used and have been able to pick out about 3 or 4 different types that she will keep in her mouth for longer than the others.
  • I could have written this post myself.

    Weary, party of one!

MIL tells me that she did that to DH! LOL

To help DD keep her paci in longer, I try pulling on it gently to have her fight to keep it in.  This causes her to suck harder. It was suggested in the HBOTB dvd.

  • OMG, Ds does this too....he will pretty much go to sleep if he is sucking on his paci, but he always gets this last "second wind" right before he falls asleep. ?He will literally thrash around on my shoulder, flinging his paci left and right, I have to do silent acrobatics to balance him, find the paci and hold it in his mouth until he snorts and then falls asleep.

    ?It's the weirdest thing...
