GTKY: What are you nerdy about?

So I feel like I've been here long enough to recognize a few of my own on here. Since I was a petite comtesse, I've been a bit of a nerd. I'm married to an even bigger nerd (self-proclaimed) and we joke that our kid doesn't stand a chance of not being a geek. But let's be honest: we're all geeky about something.

So let the geek flag fly, ladies

image

What are some things that make you nerdy...

Me--

1) When it comes to school/learning and grades, I'm practically Hermoine Granger

2) As you can see, I compare myself to characters from children's books :-p

3) I love kung-fu films and ancient epics. It doesn't matter how bad they are. Seriously, I was riveted to the 1982 Chinese classic Duel to the Death.

4) I would rather go to a museum than just about any other activity

5) I read about a book a week

6) While I'm not hardcore (like my husband or mom) I really dig fantasy and sci-fi when it's done well

7) I love cartoons

8) Based on childhood obsessions, I can tell you anything you want to know about the Star Wars trilogy or X-Men

9) I did theater in high school  and college (which, honestly, should have been listed first since I know very few theater kids who were ginormous geeks) and belt out the soundtracks of Broadway musicals any time I'm in the car

10) I'm a grammarian

  • I love Harry Potter! Smile

  • I have my BFA in Performing Arts and I was in Chorus in High School.

I am a total TV geek. Like most sitcom themes, I can tell you the words to. Especially from the late 80s/early 90s.

I love Harry Potter and geek out about it. I had a serious discussion with my 12 year old cousin about the movies and the books.

There are probably many more things I am not thinking of at the moment. But when I think of them, I will get back to you!

    As a child:

-I loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...had so much of their stuff including a sleeping bag

-I also was a Hermoine Granger. My parents never pressured me to get straight A's, I just did it for myself.

-I knew everything you could possibly want to know about all the boy bands (Nsync, BSB, 98 degrees, O-Town etc).

    Now:

-Because I used to be an impulse buyer, I get a high off of getting a good deal on something and shopping around. To the point where it can be a bit obsessive.

-As mentioned in a previous post, I love lists and excel. If I can find a reason to make a list I will...and an opportunity to attach numbers to it so I can create some formulas in excel? Even better.

  • I enjoy playing WoW

I know word for word every song and speaking part of nightmare before christmas (liked it before it was trendy)

I enjoy the renissance period.. and would kill for fares nearby there was awesome ones in NJ..

I enjoy fantasy/faerie/macabre household decor.. I have a wall hanging that's a portrait of a female vampire and you add water and this red coloring makes it look like bloods flowing from her mouth into her chalice..

I love roleplaying games. I play a text based game (a MUD or easier described.. moving book.. mmorpg without graphics, what have you.)where I pretend to be elves and nymphs (humans with wings) we have events balls and get togethers in the game..

I enjoy books but when it comes to school work I couldn't care less..

    I love Trivia!

LOVE board games and trivia. We play trivia at work via email on Fridays (rule is nobody can google stuff) and when we have family get togethers, we ALWAYS play board games.

  • I was in marching band for the first 2 years of high school! Guess I grew out of that nerdism though because I then dropped out.

I am, and always have been the techy one in my family, classroom, workplace, etc. Any computer questions always come to me.

That's all I can think of right now, but I know there has to be more...I've always been a bit nerdy! Geeked

  • Fun GTKY!

    1) I've always known I wanted an office job.  Even as a kid, I played "office" using my dad's desk and even used my allowance to buy office supplies.

    2)  I'm a huge NYC history buff.  I can't get enough of books about the city's history and documentaries.  For Christmas one year, DH got me a documentary set about NY's history starting with the Dutch by Ken Burns.  It's 8 dvd's and I've watched it many, many times already.  I feel like Ted from HIMYM coming out with fun facts about the city all the time.  DH just ignores me now.

    3)  Kind of goes with #1.  I'm a big Excel nerd.  So much so that my old boss got me a pencil holder that says "My Spreadsheets Kick A$$" and DH got me a mug that says "I <heart> Spreadsheets"

    4) I love the Star Wars movies.  I get really into analyzing the plot and have watched many documentaries on the subject.

    5)  Careless grammatical and spelling mistakes make me want to punch something.

  • I love to read. I'm getting my BA in Military History. And cartoons... Who doesn't like cartoons?! Lol... I love the X-Men and most things fantasy/sci-fi. I love the comic book series of Elf Quest, BEST EVER!! Plus, at work, I am the "go-to gal" for anything computer, finance, supply, or inspection criteria things. I think if you can't be dorky at times, then there is something wrong with you! :)

  • I'm also a school/education geek: BS in Marine Biology, JD, and a Masters in Marine Affairs, all with some kind of latin phrase on my diplomas.

Most science-y things, I tend to be pretty geeky about.  I know far too much about seaweed and salt marshes

I read A LOT, too.  And a lot of what I read tends to be non-fiction, which makes it even more geeky.  I'm currently reading Fruitless Fall, about the collapse of the honey bee and what that means for agriculture.  (It's amazing, by the way)

I'm a grammar snob, and usually won't hesitate to correct people.  I get a kick out of finding typos in books I read.

I'm becoming kind of a music nerd, but only about certain bands.  I can tell you pretty much anything you never wanted to know about the Rolling Stones, for example.

ETA: I'm a total Rent-head.  I know everything about the musical, I've seen it more times than I can count, and I could speak and sing the entire thing beginning to end for you right now off the top of my head.

  • I am a total nerd-

Definitely a book nerd. I always have been. I read often 3 books a week- I read anywhere/everywhere/all the time. I didn't even learn to ride a bike as a kid- too busy reading.

I am a Scrabble nerd. I love it- I play it on the board, on the phone, you name it.

I also love video games- but not the Halo type things. I love stupid games like Fuzion Frenzy, or Michael Jackson Dance on the Wii.

Also love trivia and board games.

But probably the biggest way I'm a nerd- is medical stuff. I'm obsessed.

  • 1) I LOVE zombie-apocalypse & apocalypse movies. and add TV shows/comic book (The Walking Dead). Zombie movies are most often set in apocalypse times, but obviously, apocalypse does not have to include zombies (eg Children of Men). My all time fave is 28 Days Later. Also love both versions of Dawn of the Dead

    2)  I don't read as much as I would like to, but I try to aim for a book every two weeks, and at the longest, every month. As an English major, I stick my nose up to chick-lit, but won't hesitate to pick up a good YA book like The Hunger Games or sci-fi like Star Wars that my brother will have lying around when I go home to visit.

    3) I went to see LOTR opening night all three times, bought the first DVD releases (always standard versions) and then buy the special edition box sets. Including the first special edition with the Gollum statue. Then bought the Trilogy box sets when the series was over. That may make me more of a SUCKER than a nerd, though. As for the books, I still have the box set I bought at a garage sale when I was in elementary school. It's in horrible condition with covers hanging by some old scotch tape, but I assure you, LO is going to be reading from these in a couple of years!

    4) I geek out hardcore. Maybe it's that English major quest for context, but once I fixate on something - a song, a band, an album, a movie, a TV show, a book - it launches me on a research adventure to delve more deeply into the world/mind. I have to know everything about it.

  • I was one of only two in my high school who actually stuck out in marching band for all 4 years.... and it wasn't a small high school.

DH has turned me into an air show geek.  Last week while we were having lunch, we saw a restored WWII fighter plane flying overhead, and stared at it for about 15 minutes. (This particular geekism is slightly problematic because we live just off a Naval Air Base and there are unique planes flying over our house all the time.)

I love problem solving - math problems, analytical problems, puzzles, whatever.  Can get lost for hours.

  • Ok... If i were on Revenge of the Nerds I would probably be Booger.  I was a pretty lousy student and I dig fart/poop/booger themed comedy.

1- I was a theater major in college.  I did live with some techies and their nerdiness surpassed my own by miles.  But it rubbed off.  Like nerdy glitter.

2- I can break out into song at any moment, and I know the lyrics to more songs than I care to admit.  I can't remember a phone number or birth date to save myself, but I can hear a song once or twice and remember how it goes forever.  Showtunes to pop to folk... it's bad.

3- I'm an antique nerd.  Or snob, not sure.  I can spot a fake or reproduction and my house looks like a grandma's.

4- I'm a food nerd.  I'll read cookbooks for days.  Not a food snob for sure.  I like cheetos and pizza rolls way too much for that.  I just like to know as much as possible.

  • Yay Nerds!

Purple Panda, I think we are nerd twins!

    I am nerdy about:

    1. Harry Potter - to the point that I have to re-read all the books prior to each of the movies coming out, everytime and I often sort people into houses :)

    2. Trivia - love all types of games

    3.  TV sitcom theme songs - I sing them in the shower and am singing the Facts of Life in my head right now

    4. Music - I am a flute geek (not of the skin variety)

    5. football facts - seriously I absorb football facts like no other and am able to spout them off at will. I love football facts and read the sports websites everyday.  It kills DH because I know way more then him.  I don't know why I can retain this stuff but the fall is my favorite time of year because I can put it to use! I am even in a fantasy football league with all my guy friends and I don't suck at it!

  • I go through books like nobody's business, I kid you not, I started one yesterday afternoon, and finished it by the time I went to bed.

I LOVE HP. My friends in Jr High were equally obsessed and we all had nicknames from the books (tough to do at an all girls' school BTW)

I actually like the Twilight books, not because I think they're super deep or well-written, but because I LOVE teen fantasy series' in general, and they're good to read when you want pure fluff.

I love faeries (hence the SN), and vampires and all that fantasy stuff. If I could afford it, my whole apartment would be decorated from Mellenium/Sanctuary (a couple of goth-y stores here), but they're insanely expensive.

I like Star Wars, and fantasy movies, but no where near as much as FI does.

I just ordered custom made Death Star cuff links for FI for the wedding. (I am employed by a photography studio/photogift company)

I am a font of useless information. I know so many random facts that the only person who will play trivia games with me is my dad, because he can beat me.

I'm also a certified Disney freak. No one has beat me at Disney SceneIt? except for once when I was drunk, and I have two jigsaw puzzles that are framed in my living room, they're from a line called Disney Fine Art, and were copied from paintings by Peter Ellenshaw. One is Cinderella arriving at the castle in her pumpkin carriage, and the other is the seven dwarves getting home from the mine. I want to get more, but I haven't been able to find ones that I like.

Also, Thomas Kincaide has a bunch of Disney paintings that I would sell my soul to get my hands on. They're beautiful.

    There's probably more.

Aside from being a really good student (I skipped ONE class in my entire college career and had a 4.0 in high school and college), I do have some other major nerd tendencies.

    1. DH and I watch Jeopardy every single day.

    2. We have more books than can fit on shelves in our house (like, we have books in storage) and we pack a separate bag of books when we go on vacation.

    3. DH is a researcher, so we don't own anything that hasn't been product researched to a major degree (CNET is his homepage).

    4. We made a spreadsheet of baby names - after we went through every name one book, cross-referenced with another.

    5. I love documentaries.

While I'm no fan of video games, computer stuff, and other typical nerd activities, I think it's safe to say our baby is more likely to be a brainiac than anything else :).

  • Music - I love classical, opera, traditional jazz/old standards, and oldies... way more so than anything more recent.  But I do love classic rock as well.  Futher -- I am also very much a music snob...I do not necessarily limit myself to certain genres, I've been known to like music from all genres, BUT -- I am picky about what I will say sounds good/talented or is real art in my opinion.  Sometimes I can let my guard down and enjoy something that just sounds catchy or has a good beat too, even if it's not brilliant....just for fun...but I might refuse to call it "art"

Another music one -- though not for listening.  When I first went to college my major was music and I was a huge Music Theory nerd...this is basically the detailed study of how music is structured and written...For many music majors it's a dreaded class because of how tedious and analytical it is and it's almost like the "math" of music...but I loved it and was planning to get my degree in it, up until I changed to Business.  So I've been called a nerd MANY times for that.  I am out of practice lately, though....

I too love Harry Potter... Not enough to where I'd ever dress up at the movie theaters though...

Grammar/Writing/Spelling nerd - The fact that SO many young people nowadays, and even some people my age and older, cannot string simple sentences together or spell simple words, or know the difference between their/there/they're, your/you're, or use punctuation, etc etc..... makes me twitchy and itchy.  I have to restrain myself on facebook....  Though, I guess in an informal setting like facebook or online, it can be more forgiven than in an official report or essay ...

Online/Video games - Both my husband and I like to play nerdy games online or video games.... he especially is very much into video games.  Luckily not so addicted to where I mind or never see him, but it's how he likes to kick back pretty often.

Watch Documentaries - DH and I both love to watch documentaries ...Discovery, History, National Geographic..True crime documentaries... Love it all! Especially History

Star Wars - Need I say more

This is probably more so cheesy/trashy than nerdy - But I DVR the Young and the Restless and watch every episode.

    There's probably more I can't think of...

  • I'm a disney freak as well! If I could work at WDW I would but DH won't move to Florida. I spend all my time reading disney trivia books and listening to disney podcasts. I'm currently reading two different biographies on Walt Disney. If I weren't pregnant my butt would be at d23 this year. We were going to get married at WDW but didn't since most of the family wouldn't be able to attend we didn't.

I'm a HP geek as well. I have read each book at least 10 times. I'll probably read the 7th again this summer before seeing the movie. I already have tickets to it. hehe It pays to know people who work at a movie theater.

    I'm also obsessed with Wicked.

I'm surrounded by nerds.  Sometimes I feel like Penny from TBBT.

  • Oh, thought of another

I LIKE math... So there :)

  • 1. Lists. This seems to be a common one for us. I also have a special interest schedules, all sorts of paper/stationary products, super fine-tip pens that don't smudge, and handwriting. I used to write in all caps/block letters and re-copy my class notes daily. That has since faded away somewhat as it is too time consuming. I have multi-level organization systems for my closets, drawers, etc. DH and I have found a happy medium for shared spaces.

    2. I <3 Discovery Health. I love medical type shows, but can't watch any super bloody/gory stuff when they are on. In fact, I can rarely watch videos of surgery despite being a surgeon unless they are directly work related. Somehow watching it on TV at home grosses me out. I also love ABC family.

    3. Historical fiction is my favorite genre.

    4. I enjoy obscure words.

    5. I wish I could include trivia. I like fun facts, but don't really know enough to make myself a nerd about it. I have very select areas of deep knowledge but probably come up about average at a trivia night.

I could keep going, but will limit myself for now.

    2. I was introduced to my husband through WoW.

    4. I want to go back to school for my Ph.D. in Math.

    5. We listen to Coast to Coast.

    6. Quality time for DH and I involves something geeky. We don't want another date "day" until Green Lantern comes out.

    7. My free time is spent reading, crocheting, or looking at math textbooks for fun.

    8. I tried out for Jeopardy as a teenager and was chosen as an alternate for the show. Spot didn't open sadly Sad

    9. We watch Jeopardy every night.

    10. In college, all my friends were huge nerds. We played Magic, Dungeons and Dragons, and held Sci Fi movie nights.

    11. DS's name is an alternate spelling of a Stargate character and a major WoW character.

    12. I've been to DragonCon a few times.

  • You guys made me think of more...

I also love puzzles, math problems, logic problems, etc. I subscribe to the Penny Press Variety puzzle books and love getting them each month. When I do all of the good puzzles in the book for the month, I go back to my Kakuro book to last me until I get the next issue.

Also a board game nerd...wish DH liked to play as much as I do, but every once in a while I can get him to play Blokus or Yahtzee or Sorry or even Skip-Bo.

    Also LOVE Excel.

And Lists. Ahh the pleasure of a fully crossed off list.

  • 1) I play WoW with my husband, stepdad, mother, and brother...

    2) I can't fall asleep after watching Criminal Minds... I have to watch a disney show before I go to bed

    3) I used to do theater, ballet, and dancing... and rocked at all of them

    4) I mimic youtube videos (Ultimate Dog Tease, Charlie the Unicorn, etc.)

    5) The only movies even worth seeing at midnight are x-men and harry potter... and maybe twilight.. [although midnight movies are out of the question during pregnancy]

    6) I like to know more about medical conditions than my doctor would tell me. This does not make me panic more than usual, but I feel informed and intelligent

I'm sure there are plenty more... like the fact that my nickname on my dance team was the walking brain.. but there's got to be plenty..

Ooh ooh, fun! Here are mine:

    1. As it turns out, I love superhero movies! I was never into it before, but DH dragged me to a few and they were great!

  • I love anime.  I used to collect it.  I have the entire DragonBallZ series (280+ episodes and 14 movies)... twice (different formats - original and redone on HD).  I also have the entire Ruroni Kensihin tv series, the movie, and the entired manga (Japanese comic books) series.  DH hates it so it cuts down on how much I get to watch it.

I like sci-fi and fantasy movies, if it's well done.  It also amazes me how much of it is based off anime.

I am a Star Wars geek.  I remember going to see Return of the Jedi in the theater for the original release in 1983.  I saw all the anniversary re-releases and the 3 new episodes at the midnight showings.  I'm always on the lookout for the Christmas Special.

I am a comic book hero nerd - X-Men, Spawn, Spiderman, etc.

I used to be able to name the original 100 Pokemon.

I love old samurai movies from the 1940s.  Even better if they are subtitles and not dubbed in English.

I love Jeopardy but DH doesn't like to watch it.  So I watch it when he's not home.
I love trivia but am not always very good at it.

I totally believe in ghosts, psychics, mediums, past lives, and 6th sense.

I love/loved Rent... but I've begun to think about it differently...

I loved that article, thanks for posting it!  And ITA with everything in it - I would also hate those hipsters if I knew them in real life, and Benny really did make more sense than any of them, realistically speaking.  What Mark and Roger and everyone else was doing/stood for wasn't necessarily right, but you can't deny the passion with which they got behind it.  Wink  Nonetheless, though, There's no escaping how fun the music is, and I don't think I'll ever get over how much I love it.

Oh, and I remember that Macy's commercial that the blogger mentions at the beginning, and I'm pretty sure I had the same reaction the first time I saw it.

ETA: And duh, I just realized that's YOUR blog!  Hahahahaha - I'm wicked smart.  Anyway, great article, I loved it!
