DH and I got in a fight last night :(

We never fight.  Well hardly ever.  And last night we were having such a fun night, having some wine and laughing about I don't even remember what.  And then we started talking about boy baby names, and it all went downhill.  He has been pushing me to name our first son "Homer" since like our 3rd date.  I went along with it for awhile, kind of laughing about it, didn't think he was serious.  But last night we started really talking about it, and he was totally pushing for it (not that we're even talking about trying again yet!!!).  And when I finally said that thinking about naming my son Homer makes me feel sick to my stomach, he got all upset and pissy and said I should have told him that sooner.  Like what, he wouldn't have married me if he knew I felt this way?  I don't understand his obsession with this name!  And ugh, now I hope we never get pregnant with a boy because I know it will be a nightmare battle to name him.  And I've always wanted a son.  Boo, DH, for being such a poop over your crappy name.

Re: DH and I got in a fight last night :(

  • It must have been one of those nights because my DH and I didn't speak to each other from like 5:30pm till this morning!

I was mad at him for going to the lake with his buddies yesterday afternoon (when I thought he was at the office working). And he left LO at daycare.  It just really ticked me off that when I want to workout for a half an hour I feel guilty about leaving LO in daycare and he just feels fine about leaving him there while he enjoys a nice day.  Granted it was probably stemmed from jealousy but I held a grudge all night and instead of talking about it I held it in till this morning.  It's over and done with now but god I was pissed last night.

  • DH and I got into a piss-throwing contest Sunday night, and it made me angry even into Monday and Tuesday.

When he came home yesterday (didn't on Mon. because of duty) he didn't think anything of it. He was sweet, grabbed me around my waist when I'd walk past to swing me into a kiss, groped me when the kids weren't looking (which always makes me giggle) and was just very sweet.

I think that's the difference between men and women. We hold onto the hurt, and men let it slide off their backs like water on a duck's feathers.

But, OP- ITA. Homer is not that cute of a name. Could you compromise and make it a middle name where it's not heard often? And please, just for me- ask him if he's naming the kids after Homer Simpson. Because if he was, I'd throat punch him.

Seriously this.  Because when I hear Homer that's what I think of.  Maybe he's got another reason for wanting to name his kid Homer, I don't know.  If it's Simpson's related there are SO many other boy names you could pick.

I'm sorry that you and your DH fought and I hope that you're able to come up with a compromise on the name when the time comes.

  • And my apologies for going off about my own problems and not commenting on yours.  I just realized this and considered how rude my post might have been.

I have to agree with Tiffany... Homer might not be the most desirable name but could work or be compromised into a middle name.  Besides Homer Simpson coming to mind, I'm thinking of Homer the ancient Greek poet.  Neither really make me want to name a child after them.

It is after Homer Simpson.  Isn't that the most ridiculous thing?  I told him that I didn't think Homer Simpson was the best role model for our son...I can't believe I had to spell that out for him.  Anyway, he finally got all sulky and said, "Fine we'll just name a dog Homer if we get one.  Or a cat.  Or a hamster.  Or a goldfish."  HA!  He was totally being sarcastic at that point, but I'm going to hold him to it.  Maybe I'll get him a kitten named Homer for Father's Day.  Wink

There must be something in the air that's making us all fight with our hubbies.  Or maybe it's just the lack of sleep that we're all getting recently.  Damn 4 month wakeful!

Not rude at all.  I didn't really expect responses, just wanted to vent!  And I'm happy to listen to your vent and commiserate!

And yeah, DH says that his favorite books are the Illiad and the Odyssey.  And that he likes the alliteration of Homer and our last name, which starts with H.  And that it's easy to spell and pronounce, but not common, etc etc.  All of which may be true.  But I can't get past the Homer Simpson thing.  He is a huge Simpsons fan--or was, back in the day--so I know all those other reasons are just blowing smoke.

And regardless of all of that, I'm not going to be talked into a baby name that I don't love.  Even if I just liked the name Homer, I would look for another name that I LOVE.  I don't think that's something you should compromise on, and I know we can find a name that we both love, when and if the time comes.

  • Yep- I think you hit it spot on in your latest post with the idea of waiting until that time comes.  You're absoutely right- you both need to love the name.  I'm sure he'll come around when & if you reach that point.
