Gaining Weight and losing it....

So I just found out I am pregnant with #2. My DS and the new baby will be 19 mo apart. I gained 35 lbs with DS and I was working out regularly...doing lots of cardio. I was completely back to prepregnancy size by about 3-4 months *although things have shifted :). I have not returned to working out since DS was born. I usually am a health nut. I eat healthy and (used to) work out all the time. My question is...did you gain more weight or less weight with #2 and was it easy or more difficult to shed the lbs. I am just curious. I know it is all worth it, but I was looking down at my belly today and had a moment where I mourned the loss of my defined abdominals. Are they gone forever?

Re: Gaining Weight and losing it....

  • I gained exactly 37 lbs with each of my girls. I was working out regularly while PG w/ DD1, and I've always eaten pretty healthy. Like you, by around 4 months pp, I was back to my pp weight with DD1. W/ DD2, it took about 5 months. My abs, however, are definitely not the same this time around :( I really need to start running again, but I haven't been. I hope it will help because right now I have this crappy pouch of a lower belly filled with stretch marks. I hate it. Weight wise, I'm totally happy where I am, so it's not about losing it, just toning....but it's like this pouch that just sits there. Ugh. Sorry, that's probably not what you wanted to hear.

  • I got my BFP when DD1 was 4.5 months old.  I had gained 50 lbs with her, and had only lost 20 when I got pregnant again.  I was so sick during first tri that I lost 10 lbs, but then gained it back, plus 35 more, by the time DD2 was born.  So I was nearly the same weight with both of them.  After DD2 was born, again I dropped about 20 pounds and then plateaued.  I started working out a few months ago, but that alone wasn't helping, so I began phase 2 of the South Beach Diet (phase 1 is not rec'd while nursing) last month.  I am down nine pounds now, with 22 remaining until I am at pre-pg-with-DD1 weight.

So I can't really compare about losing weight because I didn't have a chance to do it before getting knocked up again.  I will say that it has been really difficult to lose.  I couldn't do it without drastically cutting my carbs, and I didn't want to do that too early, because I'm determined to bf for a year.  Four months to go ... and then I can go nuts with carb-cutting.

  • I gained 37 lbs with my first and lost it all by 3 months just BFing and not working out-- besides going for walks every so often. When I got pg with DD I was a few lbs lighter than I was before I got pg with DS. With DD I was sicker and lost some weight in the beginning. Also due to my gallbldder isssues, I had to limit my fat intake and so I gained 25 instead. I was also BFing while pregnant, so it was harder to gain weight, especially with 16 wks of m/s. And chasing a toddler around, it was harder to find time to eat and I burned more calories.

Right now I weigh less than I ever have and I dont work out. My muscles are not toned, but that would be easy if I put my mind to it. My belly looks the same as before kids, but i never got stretch marks. I do plan on walking more with the kids this summer and tightening my belly before we have #3. I know it will make my pregnancy less painful on my back.

GL--you'll get back in shape if you put your mind to it.

  • With #1, I gained 30lbs and lost it by 3 months PP.

With #2, I only gained 20lbs and lost it all fairly quickly, by about 2+ months PP.

However my body got DESTROYED with #2. Even at the same weight, I looked A LOT better after #1 than #2.

A friend of mine got abs back after 2 kids, but took a year and a half of committed workouts to get back to that place.

I gained almost 40 with #1.  I lost all but 8 of it by the time I got PG with #2 9 months later.  I gained another 40 with #2.  I lost all of that by about 4 months PP by BFing and working out 1-2 times a week on top of caring for the 2 boys.  I only gained 25 with #3 and am about 6 lbs away from PP weight right now.  My belly looks about the same right now as it did after #2, which is NOT GOOD.  Must figure out a way to get back to the gym!

  • I gained about the same weight with both kids.  I didn't really work out after DS (LO #1) (I walked almost everyday while on mat. leave, but after that I didn't), so it took me about 6 months to lose all the weight.  I started working out (Zumba) at about 2 months after DD was born, and I've lost all the weight (she's 4 months now).  We're also in the process of moving, so packing/hauling boxes and cleaning like a crazy woman to get the house ready to show has also helped with the weight loss.  However, my abs are still weak and I still have a little bit of a belly.  I'm going to give it a little longer before I get really concerned that it might be like this forever...

IMO, having 2 kids so close together probably makes it more difficult to tighten things back up after the 2nd kid, since there isn't much time between pregnancies to get back to "normal."

  • With DS I gained 23 lbs (on the day I delivered).  Right now I'm 23 weeks along and have only gained 5-6 lbs.  I started out at the same weight for both.  I am not super tiny, but I'm fit and I was running 3-4 miles 3-4 days a week before I got pg.
