Aisling/Aislinn/Ashlynn - Help!

-->
This was discussed in the Ainsley post below.  I'm sorry for posting a new thread, but I was afraid it wouldn't be seen.  Can anyone give insight?

I like Aislinn better.

Me too.

Probably a dumb question, but how is this pronounced?  sounds like -Ace Lynn? or A's Lynn?

I believe the traditional spelling is actually Aisling and it's pronounced "Ashlynn." Aislinn might be an Americanized spelling. I'm sure someone will set me straight :)

Yes, I'm curious too.  I would never have known to pronounce that as Ashlynn

  • I love the name Aislinn - means dream in Celtic. We may use it as a middle name.

    Traditional pronunciation is indeed Ashlyn. But I prefer Acelinn or Aizlin as a pronunciation and everyone I've met with this name pronounces it this way.

    I only like Aislin/Aisling, the traditional spellings.

    Aislin = ASH-lin

    Aisling = ASH-ling

    I would not spell it or pronounce it any other way, personally.

    I like it, but this name will probably be mispronounced frequently, yes?

  • www.babynamesofireland.com has pronunciations.  Yes, you'll have to correct people if you use it. I have a cousin Siobhan that would probably advise against it, but not everyone finds it as annoying as she does!

  • I think you can use either the original Gaelic Aislin (Aislinn, Aislyn, Aislynn) or the American Ashlynn.  I always have to think twice and force myself to say Aislin as Ashlyn especially since I see other "Ai" names that are pronounced differently such as Ainsley and Aileen and Aimee.

    As for correcting pronunciation, it's not just ethnic names.  My name is Chasity.  Not Chastity and I have to correct people.  Neither is it Cassidy, Casedy, Chelsea or Christy (people hear that a lot over the phone).  I wouldn't discount a name just for having to correct how to pronounce it frequently, but I guess it never bothered me that much.

  • There is a little girl at my church named Aislinn, and they pronounce it (Ice-lyn), it may not be the correct pronunciation according to others, but I think it's cute. Hence why I suggested it in the thread below OP.

    AISLINN

    Gender: Feminine

    Usage: Irish

    Variant of AISLING

  • Aislin is pronounced ASH-Lynn.  There is no other pronunciation.  Anyone who pronounces it differently is either pronouncing it wrong because they don't know better or they are making up their own pronunciations.

  • A good friend of mine just named her baby Aisling.  It is definitely "ASH - ling."  Yes, people say "ace - ling" and "eyes - ling" but she simply replies to them and pronounces it correctly.  They chose the traditional spelling, so they know that they will deal with this.  I personally really like the name.

  • Ok, so my dh likes the name, but not with the original spelling. (Aislin).  Too often will be mispronounced is his opinion.

    How terrible would it be to spell it Ashlyn?

    I like it OP! Sounds very feminine to me. Ashlyn Rose or Ashlyn Evangeline sounds nice.

    ASHLYN

    Gender: Feminine

    Usage: English (Modern)

    Pronounced: ASH-lin  [key]

    Combination of ASHLEY and the popular name suffix lyn.
